HD consistently check volume bitmap

Hi all,

Is my wd 2tb hard drive doing south when windows constantly checks it for volume bitmap. I have another drive on order but want to make sure. Running win7 pro.

I will run the software for the drive to see.

Anyone experience this?

Test the hard drive using either WD data lifeguard or Seatools by Seagate. I prefer Seatools.

If you are checking the health of your drive with a manufacturer's tool it is recommended to use the tool from the specific manufacturer of your drive. In your case that would be WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic. See if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=QUey6Q
If you want some more detailed info I would recommend checking the drive with a tool taht can give you the raw values of the S.M.A.R.T. status and see what they can show you. Have in mind that they are listed in hexadecimal numbers. If you are not sure how to read them feel free to post them here and we will help you. Run crystaldiskinfo (portable version, free) on the HD, I am betting you will see lots of errors.

OK. I used the WD to do the quick test and it did not even finish.

I get this message:
Quicktest on drive2 did not complete. Status code=07(failed read test element) Failure checkpoint=102(unknown test) SMART self test did not complete on drive 2.

From this, I gather that the drive is on its last leg and I need to get all my data off it.

Yes, get as many files as you can ASAP.
However, if you have something very important on it, it is FAR better to clone said drive, and work on the clone copy.
If it is very, very important, then don't mess with the HD anymore, take it to the pros.

If the drive fails the quick test it means that it is very close to failure so I would back everything up as soon as possible and consider replacing the drive. If the drive is still under warranty feel free to contact our support and apply for the RMA procedure to get a replacement drive.
