Hi,didn't see this mentioned:

compusa has aluminum external hard drive enclosures (3.5 and 2.5) on sale. Heres a link to the 3.5, but the 2.5 is in store only. The 2.5 is only 20 bucks. I got both, but haven't tried the 2.5 since I don' thave a drive for it yet. The 3.5 works like a breeze, i stuck a 200 gig maxtor in there and it took me all of 2 minutes to start filling it with pr0n.

I have this version and the older one. The older one had an internal fan and runs much cooler but is more noisy. Not a bad deal though.

I bought this 3.5" for $30 during CUSA's Black Friday sale. It's a decent external enclosure. Well worth the money IMO.

What I like about this 3.5" enclosure is that it doesn't have the two piece power cable like most of the other external enclosures do. It does make a difference for compactness and portability. Also, it's easier to keep track of one power cable instead of a 2 piece power cable.

This enclosure also makes it easy to get at the hdd. It has 4 screws that hold down the hdd and then it has a screwless snap tight cover. You probably don't even have to screw down the hdd if you don't want to. That makes it nice if you want to switch hdd's often.

So this does or doesn't have a fan? I've not used any of the USB external HD enclosures yet. My experiences with internal HD mobile racks and HDs overheating, makes me very wary of putting one of my drives in an external enclosure like that, without a fan.

There's still no way to boot an NT-based OS from an external USB device, is there?

no fan, just the enclosure, but as salvador said above, very easy to use. snap the lid on and off and just take the drive out. you dont even need to screw it in... i haven't used it enough to test how it heats up... i'll try it out and get back to you

been running it a couple hours now, and it's noticeably warm, but haven't experienced any problems with file transfers or working with the data. It has a hum, but I think I might not have closed it correctly.

Overall I'm very satisfied! I had a 200 gig just lying around and now i have an external for 30 bucks! and the power adapter is small and convenient. Wish I had a notebook drive to test out!

I just bought one of these on the 17th and have to question the design. Aluminum outer case with a plastic liner. The drive mounts to the plastic liner so there is no physical connection to the metal case for heat dissipation. I put in a 40G and would not trust one of my hotter runniing 120G/160G to last very long in this case.

Power supply, usb cable, screws, and software drivers for Wiin98 included. XP detects the drive so no special drivers needed. >No backup software included<

The dozen or so on the shelf at the local Compusa had a price of $29.99 and no sign of it being a sale price.

With front usb ports on newer computer cases and auto detect in XP this is an easy way to back up data or a complete hard disk. I use Norton Ghost 3.0 now, but will investigate some of the " Best, Free Back-Up Utilities" at PCWorld for incremental backups..

>does anyone know which chipset it uses?

Nothing in the so called manual or CD and on what appears to be the main chip the printing is way too small for me to read.

Anyone else having problems with theirs? I'm gonna bite if this isn't gonna wreck my HD.

i haven't had any problems with it yet, tho admittedly I am not using it constantly. It is holding my sample library, and I only use that when i'm making music, and I only do that when I'm not in here neffing.

bump because deal is still alive!
