Western Digital 74GB SATA 10kRPM Raptor hard drive. Or 2x500GB Hitachi SATAII HDDs from Newegg or ZipZoomFly.com.

lol...I'm not getting raptors--if you read the OP, cost is a big issue; I'm also not getting 400-500GB drives. Poor college student I am.

Anyway I don't like the idea of shelling out all that extra$ for a Seagate since I can get the Hitachi for 0.25/GB...but it seems like it might be worth it.

What I still can't figure out is why people hate Hitachi. The IBM Deathstar fiasco != Hitachi...what else is there?

hitachi hard drives has the fastest seek time for a 7200 rpm hard drive. We are talking about all the latest hard drives here....i believe they only have a one year warranty though.

Ah, that makes a bit of sense.

feelingshorter, Hitachis come with a 3yr warranty...longer than Maxtor & WD, but shorter than Seagate.

As of now, I have until Aug4 to order the Hitachi...so I might sit on it till then...lol. Meanwhile I guess I ought to find out if the Maxtor is RMA-able... But even then I'd like a new drive since this particular model has failed on me once or twice (well it failed on my dad) before.

whichever one has the best warranty, and never depend on your hard drive when it comes to the importance of your data.

Oh freakin awesome...CC is my hero! lol

Seagate drives just went on sale so it looks like I'm getting Seagate.

Question though:
Is it better to have 2x160GB (7200.7) or 1x300 (7200.8)? Cost the same $ for each choice.

My motherboard is PATA(100) and doesn't support this NCQ business...

any Serial ATA, never made a problem, on my old comp i got the same, and it still lasts after 6years, again with no problem

"Serial ATA" is not a manufacturer, genius.

You didn't have a SATA drive six years ago.

i ment any with that after the name,

You're seriously telling me that ANY drive with "Serial ATA" after it's name is a reliable and trustworthy, not to mention fast, drive?

Do you actually know what Serial ATA is?

and i can truly bet about having SATA for 6years

No, no you can't.
I love waking up to pwnage while I was gone.

I'd grab the single drive - it will be easier to move your stuff around.

Also, look at this...

According to filtered and analyzed data collected from participating StorageReview.com readers, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 is more reliable than 7% of the other drives in the survey that meet a certain minimum floor of participation.

According to filtered and analyzed data collected from participating StorageReview.com readers, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 's predecessor [/b]( Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ) is more reliable than 90% of the other drives in the survey [/b] that meet a certain minimum floor of participation

Though there's only 49 datapoints in the 7200.8 vs 503 for the 7200.7, that just sounds bad to me...7%? damn...
