HD failure

My first HD that came with the system I bought back in about 1999 seems to have just failed.
My BIOS doesn't recognize it. It doesn't show up anywhere anymore.

It was a 13 GB Western Digital that I moved to my self-built system as a slave. I was using it to store data downloaded.

Good thing it wasn't my main HD.

What is good for under $100 shipped these days?

I have an Abit NF7-S v2 board.

I see people liking Seagate for quietness on user reviews at Pricegrabber and such.

How does that look?

I see some people say it is quiet, while others in the customer reviews mention it isn't that quiet.

I am also looking at this

120 GB Seagate

arrrghh. I payed 135.00 for that not more than a month and a half ago! By the way it is quiet, I have a 120GB and 200GB both SATA, both quiet.

In any case I have to hold on and see what $$ I have left over from my check I get next week.

Maybe the prices will go down a few dollars heh.

Go with either a seagate or WD IMHO. A just installed a 160gb WD drive for a friend that bought it on newegg for around $96 or so. If you go for the 120gb...I think its like $10 cheaper or so. I've had great experience with both seagate and WD, so id say you would be safe either way.

Fry's (if available to you, if not, try outpost.com) has a 160GB Seagate HD for $69.99, no rebates.

bah and they have a weekly special for

Western Digital 250GB WD2500JBRTL UATA100 8MB Buffer - Retail Hard Drive Kit
Capacity: 250GB
Seek Time: 8.9ms
7200RPM
8MB Buffer
1 Year Limited Manufacturer Warranty

Limit 2 per Household.
$154.99 Store Price
$99.99 After Rebates

but I hate rebates. You have to remember to send it in, then you forget that you did and never know if they 'forget' to send you your money back.

Try taking a look at the Hitachi (IBM) Deskstar 7k250. They are only SATA but they are the fastest 7200 rpm drives right now (not sure about that new Maxtor w 16mb cache but I don't think that's out yet.) Mine is also very quiet under intensive operation. Can barely hear it loading a BFV map or Defragging. Or formatting!

Yes, the Maxtor 16MB Cache Sata II is out. The model #6B300S0 or 7B300S0. It is available on newegg. Here is the link to the 6B300S0:

and the link to 7B300S0:

hope this helps.

The 5 year warranty is attractive.

I hope within 2 years to be in a tech job (Heald College student) and making money to pay for failures easier.

It's hard paying for failures working near minimum wage, 32 hrs a week, and going to school.

Since you're looking to stay under $100 shipped I would go for a 160g Samsung with an 8 meg cache for around $85 ar Newegg. I've got one and so far I am 100% happy with it. It's also nearly dead silent and comes with a 3 year warranty.

What is the difference between these 2 Maxtors? They both seem the same, tho Maximum PC gives high marks to the 6B model.
