What am I missing here?
System
AMD K6-300
TX chipset
64 mB ram
Windows 98 (original)
ATA33 Maxtor 6.8 gB
For several years this has been a very stable system. Recently, at startup I got a BSOD stating something to the effect that some drivers were incorrect or missing and, to avoid disk corruption, I should boot to Safe Mode.
I did, and discovered that System Properties was showing multiple and/or duplicate entries for a number of devices.
I've cleaned that up, but still have a problem with the hard disk controller. The PCI Bus Master IDE Controller installs OK, but the Primary & Secondary controllers install with the yellow exclamation icon.
Bios detects & displays the hard drive correctly as LBA, UDMA2. I am able to boot into Windows normally and can access C: (and D:, if I install a second hard drive) via Windows Explorer.
System Properties Device Manager shows no hard drives.
For the Primary & Secondary IDE controllers it says
"This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed (Code 10)."
It shows the driver files loaded are
ESDI_506.PDR
IOS.VXD
which I believe are correct.
System Properties Performance says the hard drives are running in DOS Compatibility Mode.
The Primary & Secondary IDE controllers are on the standard IRQ's - 14 & 15. No IRQ conflicts are indicated.
No hard drives are enumerated in the registry. (I removed the entry that was there in hopes it would be re-detected and do a "clean" install.)
System Properties Device Manager displays no CDrom (a NEC 282 ATAPI which is normally detected as PNP). The CDrom is still enumerated in the registry, leftover from when all was well.
The system is running (I'm using it now) but I'd sure like to get it back to normal. I'm sure someone will clue me in or jog my alleged memory.
TIA

When you're running in dos-compatibility mode something is wrong dealing with your hard drive. Have you tried d/ling new HDD controller drivers? If their is no resource conflict then its something wrong with Windows drivers and its not able tto correctly use your HDD. Only solution I can ssay is remove it from device manager and restart for it to re-detect..... otherwise just go d/l some new HDD controller drivers and try those....

BTW, when you boot in safe mode it usually shows duplicate devices even though there aren't really. Removing them does nothing as they dont really exist.

I am not sure if 98 had the issue as well, but I seem to remember Win95 having issues with the TX chipset that required you to run the INTEL CHIPSET DRIVERS in order to run properly. You can download them from the intel website.

You haven't changed anything before this started happening? Try removing one drive at a time, including cd crives, see if the error goes away. Try loading BIOS optimized defaults and put the 4 IDE devices on AUTO. Try removing you cards one at a time. Try disabling DMA in device manager.
