I'm building a computer for the first time tomorrow, and since I was just checking out my shiny new lian-li pc60 case , I noticed that the HD mount seemed to be vertical. Since there are no instructions about this with the case, and it just doesn't seem right to mount a HD that way, I wanted to check before I screw something up. Oh, and by vertical, I mean on its side.

Yes vertical is just fine. Many microATX cases mount them straight up because of space concerns.

<< space concerns >>

Actually there are some of those. I heard hard drives were failing much earlier than anticipated aboard the new international space station. Had to have a space shuttle send up some better ones. Zero-G is a biatch I reckon.

You can mount a hard drive in any position but you should format it in that position.

Just mount it anyway you like. The taboo on vertical mounting and formating is just from the very old days of non-parked hard drives.

If you're really concerned and if you've got a 5 1/4 bay available, for about $5 you can get
an adapter and mount it there....Greg

I personally wouldnt. Theoritically, imagine the 'head' swings upwards, its force is DIFFERENT when it swings downwards, due to added gravity on its downward swing. This difference can only cause problems. At least in my 'theory'. But in actual life, I havent seen any major difference yet. But then one thing, wont it take longer to swing up than to swing down? You might get some weird access time

It doesn't matter...if you take one of those HDD's apart you''ll notice a counter weight on the other side of that arm...going in the opposite direction. So the weight of the arm has no bering on things.

I've had a WD 2.1GB HDD mounted vertically in my Micron Millennia system for 5+ years (I also had it horizontally for a few mths, then put it back vertically). No problems. Dell ships out many systems (e.g. Dimension 4100) with a vertically mounted HDD and I'm sure they have been for years (since they use a variant of the Palo Alto ATCX, which I believe has a drive cage to mount a drive vertically)...I don't think this is an issue, if it ever was, it was a long time ago.

HP Vectras used to (maybe still do!) ship with the drive mounted upside down.

Most Dell Dimension systems mount their hard drives vertically. Mine is like that, and it has been working for nearly 2 years with no problems (other than extensive cases of user error and abuse )
