HD4850 or 9800gtx+

I need a recommendation. My current system is as follows

E4500 @ 3GHz
Windows Vista 32bit
8800gts 640MB OCed to 620/1800
Gigabyte P35-DS3L
2GB of DD2 but will be getting another 4GB.

Now, I don't know what I should do.

HIS HD 4850

or

EVGA 9800 gtx+ with CODW@W

or should I wait? When are the newer budget cards coming out?

Edit: I just OCed my CPU and GPU. With these new clocks is it worth upgrading now or should I just get a better Hard drive or something. I have an old 160GB hard drive.

probably a wast of time upgrading to those. If you overclock your 8800gts you could easily get performance level of 4850 or 9800gtx.

You probably want a 260 or 4870 to notice some gains.

They're neck and neck. Basically if you like nvidia get the 9800, if you like ATI get the 4850. Nvidia also has Physx and CUDA, but few people actually use anything that uses this.

IDK if you could match the 4850/9800GTX with a 8800GTS. 4850/9800GTX is only slightly faster though.

they are neck and neck, but that is a modified 4850 with a dual slot cooler - you could easily do 4870 clocks on it.

I'd do what azn said and pick up a 260/4870 for around 40 bucks more - you will notice more of a difference.

Yeah, with no subjectivity to cloud the results!

Flip a coin O.P., they are both solid mid-range cards. I probably go with the EVGA for the 90 step-up program flexibility and very good warranty.

I tend to lean towards AMD stuff as of late, but in this case I think you'd be better off with the 9800GTX+. They are the same price, perform pretty much the same, but EVGA > HIS and you get a game with the EVGA card. Of course as others have said if I were in your shoes I'd go with a 4870/GTX260 for a more substantial upgrade. Then again I bet that HIS 4850 will overclock like mad.

I have a palit 4850 sonic and it can reach 740/2300 with its cooler stable, no volt mods necessary. I've heard that some were even able to get it to 770 core. But seriously, both your options are almost equally matched, just choose your personal preference. I'll be biased with the 4850 though.

I hit 9800gtx stock speeds on my 8800gts 512MB G92 when I had it. I'd venture to say you might be able to get there as well and sit out the upgrade.

Too small of an upgrade to worry about it. Sit a bit more and wait for the refreshes.

Or just get a 260 or a 4870.

well remember one thing
u can reach the clock speeds of a 4850 or a 9800 gtx by over clocking but the main issue being that u can even overclock the 9800 gtx and 4850 so this negates any difference
i also need a 4850

and another point which i feel needs confirmation IS
that 4850 is kinda new to the market and 9800 gtx is old so 9800 gtx might have recieved all the latest drivers so
4850 might not had received them yet (the best ones ) so that way i THINK 4850 can beat 9800 gtx in the long run

The performance between a HD4850 and 9800 GTX+ is very close so you can't go wrong picking either of them.

Yes, you can overclock both of the cards, but I'm willing to bet that the 4850's (especially with 3rd party coolers) overclock better on average. The 9800 is pretty much the top of the line of that GPU, it's already pushed pretty far as far as clock speed goes. The 4850's are more or less just underclocked/lower binned 4870 chps... this means that they'll probably have a lot of headroom. For the same reason that the GTX260's are generally considered good overclockers (because they are lower clocked/lower binned GTX280 chips with a few parts disabled) the 4850 should be a stout overclocker as well.

Do you really need to upgrade? Do games not perform well enough with your current card? If I were in your place, I wouldn't be upgrading until the next generation of GPUs was out, but that's just me. If you really do need to upgrade, I wouldn't recommend getting anything slower than a 4870/GTX260, as there just isn't that much of a performance difference between a 640MB GTS and a 9800/4850.

As for your hard drive, that's a lot more obvious - get a bigger drive if you're running out of space.

How would you get those clocks? ATI's driver overclocking limits you to well below the 4870 clocks. Plus, memory speed will never reach that high...

BTW OP, I'd spend a bit more and go for a card with 1GB of ram. At least then it'll cut down on stuttering and texture pop-in in games, and maybe even net a nice performance increase at high settings.

Or if you want a nice performance boost, you may want to look at dual gpu cards. The 4850x2 is relatively inexpensive.
