You might need to update your bios on your motherboard; a lot of the newer cards have had issues with different motherboards......quick update of the bios should have you up and running.

I don't have another computer I can test the card in and I did do a BIOS update with no luck. I've RMAd it back to Newegg, so hopefully it was just a bad card.

Then it most probably was a bad card. Hope the replacement works just fine.

That sucks. Hopefully you get the replacement sent within 7-10 days and have time to send that rebate and register for lifetime warranty too.

I received the replacement card and sadly the same issue remains. The card lights up and fans run, but just a black screen when I power up. If I pull the monitor cable I get the "no signal" message displayed. I've updated my BIOS to the most recent version available. Could there be an incompatibility issue with my motherboard? I made a post earlier in the thread with links to my particular motherboard and PSU. Help!

I can't imagine it's the motherboard or PSU. If it's plugged into the power supply properly that really should be all there is. I suppose there could be an issue with the motherboard not supplying enough power to the PCI-e slot but I've never heard of that being an issue.

Have you tried both of the PCI-e slots?

Edit: have found some reports of compatibility issues with older chipsets and newer cards like the 290x and gtx 970.

Question, do you turn off the PSU (turn off from the PSU button) when you take off the old GPU and replace it with the R9 290 ??

Cleared CMOS annd tried the other PCIe slot...no dice.

1. Does the old card work in the same system?

2. Have you tried using different PCIe inputs on the PSU - with different cables? Do you have the 6/8-pin connectors snugly secured in the new videocard? Did the card snap into the PCIe slot?

3. Was the new card you received in a brand new/sealed box?

4. Have you tried both of the DVI ports on the R9 290? Are you using any VGA adapter to connect to your monitor? Only one of those ports seems to be able to run digital monitors, the other is analog:

Max Supported Resolution (ANALOG) : 2048 x 1536
Max Supported Resolution (DIGITAL) : 2560 x 1600(DVI);4096 x 2160(HDMI;DP)

5. Have you tried flipping the BIOS switch on the GPU between 1-2 to see if there is any difference?

6. Try uninstalling the AMD drivers completely while the old card is in the system and just boot. While at it, might save your OCed profile/settings and load Optimized/Defaults in the BIOS and try booting that way.

7. Try only leaving the only SSD/HDD with the primary OS connected, while disconnecting all the other SATA devices upon boot. When you shut down the computer, make sure to use the power off switch on the back of the PSU and wait at least a minute before restarting.

See that your PSU is a modular cable type unit. Make sure you have the Pci-e pwr cables plugged into the correct receptacle on the PSU. Check the manual and even check the manufactures website for service notes. Maybe the PSU manual revision you have is wrong.
