Hello i was wondering if this hdcp affects the video cards. i know i will have to buy a new monitor in order to watch hd dvds and blue ray. i recently built a new pc and i have a BFG 7800GTX oc graphics card. Would i hove to buy a new card or will there be new driver that would make the card support hdcp?

thanx for your input in advance

I first read that as "I would love to buy a new card."

AFAIK, vid card will not be affected by it, one DVI out is as good as the next..

Why is everyone so concerned about HDCP? It isn't even for certain that it will affect ANYTHING regarding your computer. Even if it did, the hardware/software that would use it won't even be used for another year or more.

Everyone is a sucker for the hype. Upgrade everything now otherwise HDCP will melt you computer!

HDCP is point to point...meaning your video card AND your monitor will have to be HDCP-compliant.

save your money, buy a card at the end of next year when they have dx10 compliant cards. You know you'll want to buy one then to take take advantage of windows vista

I think the optical drive is going to be the first problem.

What are you playing the discs in?

EDIT: oh, and from what I read I think that most modern videocards since the radeon8500 days onward have been HDCP compliant (don't quote me on that)

HDCP compliant, but they don't have the chip

I really hate intel now, since they are after this whole HDCP thing for most part. AARGH, I'm glad there is NO part in my computer intel, and I won't be buying anything INTEL in my computer wich I'm probably won't be able to buy for the next year BECAUSE OF INTEL

Uh... what "chip"? They just need to pass the encrypted output to the display. AFAIK, all relatively recent ATI and NVIDIA cards *should* support it, but I can't guarantee that 100%.

HDCP has nothing to do with Intel or Microsoft (or any other computer company). It's the MPAA that's pushing it so hard; AMD/Intel and MS are just trying to support it on their platform so you can actually watch HD-DVD/Blu-Ray content on your PC.

intel developed HDCP, and it requires some sort of chip to handle the signal, I think.
