Once a computer is set up with multiple hard drives with sata cables, is that cable "married " to that hard drive?
IE: if I reverse C and D drive cables (assuming D is a hard drive) would D now think it's C? Or does the hard drive tell the header who it is?

The cable itself makes no difference. The port does (for C), but even then you can go into the BIOS and tell it to boot off your drive from the other port number. Some boards even know that's the boot drive, and can follow the port change with no user change needed. For any drive other than C, you can change the drive letter from within Windows.

Still trying to work though this issue.
Had 4 drives: C, D, E and F
C was a 128 GB SSD
D is a 500 GB SSD
E and F are 500 GB mechanical

Bought a 500 GB SSD and used Samsung Data Migration to copy the 128 to the new 500.
.
It worked but somehow it hosed up D. Can't see any files on it and it wants to be formatted.

Can you use the 128gb you cloned and place that back in the computer. If that solves problem then back up drive D elsewhere, then go back to 500gb SSD. Now if needed you have your contents backed up and can reformat if needed.

No joy.
Had to reinstall everything on D.

Then I put the old 128 GB C drive in a portable case to use between home and work. I formated it but it would only come up as Unallocated, nothing I tried worked. So thinking that it worked as the boot drive I cloned the new C drive to it hoping to just delete the windows folder and any others. It cloned it but, it also partitioned my good D drive and added an H drive. It left 100 MB for D so now nothing works on D as it is now H.

I give up on the Samsung software. Had nothing but issues with it a few years ago when I put an SSD in my wife's older laptop. I was hoping the fixed it.

Just going to wipe everything and probably do the upgrade from 8.1 to 10.
