HDD Crapping Out?

I have this IBM deskstar drive and it has worked fine for 2-3 years. Recently I was attempting to reinstall windowsXP on the system, and I could not get through the format phase of install. I then took the drive and put it on another system and while it would recognize and allow access to the second partition on the drive, it would not allow me to do anything to the C partition. I ran some of the disk checking utilities that windows has and they all came back clean. I did however notice a repeated, click and spin noise when attempting to format. Just from what i've read in other threads, it seems like this drive is just done for. The only thing that I'm confused about is why I can still access the D partition.

I checked all through the body of your post and didnt notice a question mark(?), however, going on the fact that there is a question mark in your title, I am going to assume that you are indeed asking a question without question marks. Ok.

First of all, at what phase did it not go through the format phase of the install. More specifically, what message did it give you?

Essentially it begins the format and somplace around either 1% or like 15, it stops and just hangs at the current completion. I guess what I'm wondering is did this drive crap out on me like so many others have said about IBM's? It seems to make the seeking/clicking noise that I've heard about, but I am still able to access the second partition, which is why I'm unsure if this is the same problem I've heard about.

Go here and get the Drive Fitness Test. Make a floppy. Boot off of said floppy. Run the full test on the drive.

From what I remember the clicking is a warning sign in the Deskstar. I would suggest you backup everything you want to keep ASAP just in case.

l have a 3yr old Deskstar and it's starting to click and act up usually on bootup. I am surprised it lasted this
long after all the trouble IBM had with their drives the past couple years. Even had to sell the division to Hitachi. I would remove all the important data from the drive ASAP.
