Any tips? How are you coping with it? Cause they're selling us HDDs they had stocked for months for twice or more the price, getting astronomic margins.

Are you serious? You make it sound like a national security problem.

Here's the best tip anyone will give you today...
Buy a HD if you need one.
If you don't need a HD then don't buy one.

Storage prices are still historically dirt cheap.

Sure, if you discount the last two years of history...

For at least the last six months I've been able to regularly pick up 500GB drives for $40 shipped, and 1TB drives for $50-55 shipped. Today, the cheapest 500GB drive on Newegg is $66 shipped, and the cheapest 1TB drive is $76 shipped.

That's an increase of 65% for the 500GB drives. A gallon of gas in Madison this morning was $3.33 - if later today it was $5.50 (a 65% increase), then that would be considered a crisis. ...Thankfully hard drives aren't as consumable and as critical as gasoline.

That said, most computers I sell are $300 and $400 budget boxes. I already raised my prices to $325 and $425; we'll see how that affects sales.

Not a national security problem of course but...

Storage prices are still historically dirt cheap.

Must be nice to live in America right now. I've checked some online and physical stores (big chains):

65€ -> 125€
75€ -> 214€

add about 10€ for shipping.

Other just remove all stock and tell you to wait, maybe they sold out, maybe they're just hiding stock to sell it later.

So if I need 4TB to store my projects, movies, music and games, I should just buy some HDDs right? I know about supply and demand but here it's getting ridiculous and I would bet those drives aren't new stock.

I was thinking about building a NAS, but it's too expensive right now, so it seems this isn't hurting just me, but Asus, Kingston, Intel, Lian-li and some others because I'm not going to build the NAS.

I'm going to stop my rant now :biggrin:

(BTW 1€ it's about 1,4$ today)

I think the crisis is elsewhere. In the future if you really want to deal with a crisis... don't cry about it... do something, then help others by giving tips. If you are a girl... I apologize.

If SSDs didn't exist yet, this disaster would basically mean no new computers for quite a few months.

Anyone know where SSDs are made? With more demand, it's going to push prices back up again.

The cost of an SSD is looking a hell of a lot better per GB than it did last week!

They got expensive really quickly.

"As of 18 October, flooding has affected 2,484,393 people from 824,848 families".

Are you kidding me? It's not an HDD crisis. It's a natural disaster that's displaced millions of people..

Come on.

You're correct that it is a natural disaster, and that the impact on those people is tragic.

This does not, however, negate that, as it relates to computers, this is a crisis. As it relates to global economic recovery, still shaky from 2008, this could cascade into a crisis.

The world is not a singular being with a singular focus, and it would be short-sighted to discount the other ways in which this disaster is impacting both the local and global populations. The same comments were made when having discussions about automotive and electronic supply disruptions after the March 11 disaster in Japan. I don't know how much of Thailand's economy is dependent upon these companies, or if their economy was as fragile as Japan's, but I am quite certain that the loss of income is going to have a negative impact on that country.

Hmm, the WD caviar black has almost doubled in price, now $129. At least the hitachi 1TB platter drive is still only $99. Seems to be the drive to get!
