Hey guys so I have a fairly new system built just this month and everything was running fine. I bought a new 1TB WD Cavair Black for storage and a 120GB OCZ SSD for the OS.

So heres the problem. I wanted to save some files from my old IDE hard drive to my 1TB. I checked the old pc and the psu was semi modular but didn't have any sata power cables so I unplugged the modular sata power cable I was using in my new pc to power the 1tb and plugged it into the old psu.

But the computer wouldnt start with it plugged in. So I dragged over my new rig and I had the power cable coming from my new rig to the 1TB and the sata cable going to the old pc mobo. That windows didn't recognize it. After checking the connections I gave up and decided the files weren't worth the trouble. I rehooked up the cables in my main pc and now the bios wont recoginze the 1tb.

It was working perfectly before and It is partitioned and what not. I don't understand why it would stop working like that. I doubt it is dead beacuse I only bought it on the 14th of this month.

Any ideas? Help appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not sure what's meant by modular SATA power cable. More likely that SATA power cable on the PSU end was not oriented correctly or is that calbe was not meant for the other power supply and may have shorted the drive.

Either way... plug your 1TB back inot your new system that worked and only attach the power cable. If it doesn't spin up, try a different power cable. If spins up... plug in the SATA data cable as well. Then in the BIOS ensure that the drive controller is enabled and any detection is set to AUTO. If it doesn't detect it try a different SATA data cable.

I once shorted a HDD and all my fault. Luckily it was an OEM HDD from a Dell desktop and Dell was making plenty of money at the time so I had no bad feelings getting a warranty replacement for it. I swear I didn't lie to them... I only told them enough truth to get a replacement sent.

After leaving it plugged into my working new computer for awhile I went to check it and it felt warm to the touch, I smelt it and I't smelt like burning solder or something similiar. I think I have got a dead drive. FML.
