Hdd or CPU?

Im about to give my server/ main rig an 80£ upgrade (@ Present; AMD XP 1600+, Asus A7N8X Deluxe, 512mb DDR 2700, Radeon 9700 Pro 20gb Maxtor HDD) So i dont know what to spend it on , either way i will also be able to upgrade my second computer with the part i take out of the main rig so 2 upgrades in one
I was thinking either an AMD XP2500 Barton or AMD XP 2600 TBed or a new 80GB either seagate or maxtor SATA/ide hdd, i ONLY have 80£ so its a tight budget. I use my rig for crunching seti wu so the CPU upgrade would be great, but at present i have to watch what i install on my HDD, What do you guys think....by the way its crunching for team anandtech if that sways your descision

if your out of space then go for the hard drive.

it sounds like (for you) the CPU is okay (but could be nicer) and the hdd is just not working.

HDD aint so bad just cud do with more space if you get me.....i think it will be the cpu really but which on do you suggest...2500 Barton or 2600 TBred....whcih one will overclock best?

the 2500+ can oc to 2.2 and above is MOST cases, not sure about the 2600+. btw, i would go w/ CPU as well

Thanks i was thinking about the 2600 because tbreds are supposed to be readily over clockable, but now im not so sure there only like 10 quid in it so it isnt really a bang for buck question just best results

I have read a good number of great results when overclocking the 2500+ (I simply do not see the need to overclock. If I need something faster, I'll buy it, and I don't risk stability issues, since stability is far more important than a few extra MHz). However, the bottom line, I think, is what do you need more. A faster processor might crunch your SETIU units a little faster, but if you need more hard drive space, there really is no choice than to get a hard drive. Of course, you could try to upgrade both if you look around the FS/FT forums.

i would go with a new hdd that 5400 snail is just too slow. ive livin with tbird 1.2ghz. runing games and stuff fine.

That 20 gig Maxtor is probably 7200 rpm, so unless you are in need of disk space, definitely get the fastest XP CPU you can afford. Its a real tossup on the 2500 or 2600 as far as OC'able, just get the fastest you can afford. You won;t be sorry, as that matches the rest of your system well, the 1600 is too slow.....
