HDD Problem

Sorry if this has been posted before I looked but didnt see anything. I was upgrading a OLD Win98 PC to XP and everything was going fine but when it restarted to finish the install it gave me a blue screen saying UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. I tried replacing the cable like it says to do in the Microsoft KB but that didnt help (Btw this is a new 80gb Maxtor drive and the MoBo is a old Biostart M5ATC). After a while it started saying that NTDLR or something like that couldnt be found so I booted from A: Drive and did a Dir command on drive C:. All of the files names are like "[(%! and things along those lines.... I have seen this once before but it was about 5 years ago and I just ended up buying a new HDD. Any idea on what I should do? I am writing zeros to the HDD right now to try and fix it.

Yeah I just finished trying that but after its done copying files to the HDD from dos and tries to boot up to finish the install it says: A Disk read error occcured press ctrl+alt+del to reboot. I did that a several times but it still doesnt work I think the HDD might be dead

easy to tell if its the drive or not, visit maxtor and get their hard drive diagnostic....run the full test.

What OS are you trying to load onto it?

make sure your disk is not scratch.

try a low leve format with the maxtor utilities. Write 0's to the drive and then start over. I had a similar prob a few weeks ago, if the drive is alive this should work.

If you got a good run out of it... sounds like time to replace HD's.

Sorry it took a while to get back to you all, been busy! I ran the checks and wrote 0's and it passed them all so maybe its something else. I am going to try putting it into my Primary computer as a slave and see if I can read and write things to it. Thanks for you suggestions
