Hi guys. I decided to buy bigger HDD to my ps3 slim and when Iam at it, I want it to be quicker than the 5400rpm currently inside. Is this HDD: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3734/seagates-momentus-xt-review-finally-a-good-hybrid-hdd going to work in PS3 to its full potential? Isnt it going to be limited for example by something like slow sata in PS3 or something like that? Thank you.

These hybrid drives have been around for a few years and were first annouced about the time when VISTA was coming to market in early 2007. Earlier models which were only made by Samsung didn't provide any real benefits and therefore never really caught on.

In order for a hybrid HDD to work as you would expect, the operating system must support such a device, any WINDOWS OS from VISTA onward will work with a hybrid HDD. As far as I know, the PS3 does not support hybrid-drive operation. If such a drive were used in a PS3 or with a non-supported os, it would function like a plain old fashioned non-hybrid drive.

So save your money and get a high capacity 7200 RPM drive, or use one of those 3.5" HDD adapters for the PS3, or splurge for a full fledged SLC SSD.

I've seen videos and the speed gain is really good on XT vs regular 7200rpm HDDs. I originaly wanted SSD, but price is too high,

so I found about these hybrid drives, but I wanted to know if the speed gain would be as good on PS3 as on regular PC, sometimes near speed of SSD.
I havent found any data on internet regarding momentus XT in PS3....

were they by seagate? Marketing departments will do anything to sell you something... and I don't think a standard 3.5" drive is going to work inside a PS3. I'm guessing you want storage for media, in which case get these

If you want to replace the one inside, you're not going to see any performance increase from a 7200 RPM drive. It will really be a waste of money. Why do you want it to be faster? Is your PS3 having performance issues? If you are having issues during gameplay it could easily be a different issue.

I thought I had read about the PS3 having a 640gb limit for it's internal hdd. A larger could be used, but only 640gb of it.

As for 5400 vs 7200; some testing was done awhile back and in some cases the benefit of the 7200 was just a matter of seconds, and in other cases it was actually slower than the stock 5400.

Well then 640 is also available in the blue, but seconds in relation to what? a big download, or bringing up a movie file or something?

It was comparing the loading times for games.

Also, I'm not saying that 640 gb IS the limit. I was just saying I THOUGHT I had read it being the limit. I'm not 100% sure. So don't take it as fact. I wanted to throw that out there in case the op wants to go big with his hdd. That way he could look further in to size limits. No need paying for a larger hdd if a smaller would be better.

you will not notice a difference on the ps3 going from a 5400 to a 7200... just get a 5400 because they are more cost effective

i put in a 1tb wd blue 5400 in my ps3 and it works great

I have seen a 3.5 inch HDD adapter for the ps3 which allowed a 150GB Western Digital Raptor to be installed.

There are others to chose from, the last one I saw cost around $30.
