Solid state will pwn.

Yeah when we all have FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) getting 100+ Mbps... Any type of player will become less prevalent. In the far future maybe even close to non existent with the exception of enthusiasts.

With DVRs, PPV and VOD becoming more popular it is already taking a hit on movie media sales. Its faster, just as good for most, and especially more convenient.

How the hell does a new type of hard drive that is completely rewriteable have ANYTHING to do with optical media that is used for playing movies?

I know that, but its an add-on. PS3 its built in. Yes, PS3 costs more, but we're talking about penetrating the market to the "average" user, not the "power" user, and the average person is more likely to take what they already have.

because theyll be able to make them into little "disks" the size of.. .hrmmm a persons thumb... then they will sell them and you will be able to plug them into your computer without even have a drive and uh.... oh wait.

there will be a clear cut winner about 3 days before the following...

Toshiba will release its SEUDDVD (Super Extra Ultra Definition DVD) player...
Simultaneously, Sony Anounces Purple Ray, its New proprietary DLQVD (Double Layered Quantum Video Disc) standard, which is to be included in every playstation 17, expected retail price: a bazillion guzillion dollars.

And we start all over again

that sounds ridiculously expensive.

bill gates is probably right: this is the last physical format for movies/media. next generation tech will all be streamed to us via some sort of IP TV box, and perhaps stored on the box, though that won't be necessary. where bill and i might differ is i don't see the PC being the main box used to do it. it'll be more akin to your cable box. because, as much as people might hate having 10 remotes for 10 different boxes, a multipurpose box is more complicated, for the most part.

From Wikipedia on blu ray vs hddvd:

On November 29, 2004 four Hollywood studios (New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Warner Bros.) announced non-exclusive agreements to support HD DVD. Since that time, Paramount and Warner have chosen to release titles in both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, while only Universal has since announced exclusive support for HD DVD. Currently Sony Pictures, MGM, Disney and 20th Century Fox have all exclusively backed Blu-Ray.

Just like how games make the game console, movies make the movie format. Universal is no slouch, but I see bigger numbers in Sony's corner...

There was never a winner to the (+) or (-) formats in CDs and DVDs, why should there be a winner in this "battle"?

There is no such thing as a CD+R, only CD-R's.

Also, DVD+R's are better for many reasons over DVD-R's including:
Booktypable to DVD-ROM = Better compatability
Better ECC = less errors

And other things...

(1) cds never had a +/- format war.
(2) the +/- dvd format war is absolutely nothing like hd-dvd/blu-ray format war. Reasoning, both disc formats always work in any dvd drive and in most all dvd players. If you want a comparison, it would be rewritable dvds versus dvd-ram.

Anyone else want to tell me about there not being + CD's?

I think the comparison is sound though. I don't think there will ever be a "winner". They will coexist and most people will have players that can read both types.

The real issue is that: There is no such thing as a DVD-ROM vs a DVD+ROM.

A pressed DVD is always a DVD-ROM, never anything else. DVD+R was just another format released later for (re)writable discs that improved upon the DVD-R disc.

For HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray, they use two entirely different technologies, by two different companies(that, I'm sure, hate each other), who are competing for the standard of high definition.

This NEVER happened with DVD-R/W vs DVD+R/W, the only issue was someone could go to a store and be like 'hmmm, DVD-R or DVD+R for making copies of whatever... I'll choose <insert whatever>'.

If you went to buy a DVD movie, you didn't go 'ARGH! Those stinkin DVD+ROM don't work on my DVD-ROM player! Now I can't watch this movie' there was just DVD-ROM's, period.

HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray is much bigger than DVD-R vs DVD+R.

There is already a clear cut winner. The porn industry has chosen HD-DVD over blueray. Porn will always win.

People keep repeating this, and it still isn't true. The porn industry is using both formats at this time.

And even if they did choose one over the other, the porn industry does not have as much influence on the end result as most people think (and by "think," I mean "repeat what they heard on the Internet.")

I think there will be a clear winner sometime in 2007 or 2008.

An interesting question is, will those average users buy Blu-Ray discs just because they have the player? I think the discs prices are still in the early adopter range... I think the prices need to come down a bit before the "average" user will be willing to buy more than a few.

On the other hand, you know every Xbox HD-DVD drive is being bought by someone who wants it to watch movies.

I think the PS3 will help Blu-Ray a lot though.

There are over a million Blu-Ray players in homes, and that includes PS3s. There are less than 200,000 HD-DVD players in homes, and that includes the 360 add on. (This info is accurate as of a recently read article)

Considering Sony is pushing Blu-Ray like crazy, it's unlikely that someone with a PS3 won't know that there are Blu-Ray movies...and it's unlikely they won't at least watch one.

Also, as of the 2007 year, HD-DVD has still sold more movies than Blu-Ray, but the number is very quickly closing. For the last couple weeks, Blu-Ray movies have outsold HD-DVD movies by almost a 3:1 ratio. linky

And yes, the porn industry supports both formats.

More movie companies back Blu-Ray as well.

I think in the end Blu-Ray will win, but I don't think HD-DVD will completely die.

Blu ray will win, as it comes with every PS3. That could change if MS released an Xbox 720 with integrated HD-DVD player, but unlikely before PS3 builds up steam. I think PS3 will catch the 360 in numbers eventually, now that you can actually buy them.

Personally, I dont care, but probably prefer HD-DVD because the movies are cheaper at the moment.

According to Sony (yeah, I know) even though it's not selling out like Wii they are still selling 100K PS3s a week in the US.

So every 2 weeks they add as many blu-ray players as the total number of HD-DVD players sold so far.

Netflix and Blockbuster rent both formats for no extra charge, so PS3 owners don't even need to buy BD discs to have an effect on disc sales by making Nf and BB buy them.
