i installed Mandrake 9.1 fine, without my RAID card plugged in.

booted up, had a look, no worries,

then plugged my RAID (Silicon Image 0680)back in and i get this error message upon boot up and it wont go past it, just pops it up every minute.

obviously it cant read my NTFS RAID, but that shouldnt stop the whole boot process ??!?1

any suggestions to get around this, besides openning it all up and unplugging my draives every time i want to boot it
a way to disable its search/auto load of my RAiD card ??

thanx

So if I got you right, you have a mandrake installed on a harddrive that is not a part of the RAID. Then when you plug in the RAID card you get that error message?

Do you get to the linux bootload and it starts to load the kernel and then all the startup messages go wizzing by and you get that error? Or do you get that error right off of the bat?

The ide numbering system goes
hda -primary master
hdb -primary slave
hdc -secondary master
hdd -secondary slave

and I suppose that all the raid-based harddrives are hde hdf hdg etc etc? I am not sure about that, never used ide raid array before...
If it is that, I suppose you could mess around with the bios settings or jumper settings to make sure that hda is hda with and without the card plugged in, if you get my drift.

Or is it you are unplugging the harddrive from the ide controller, putting the RAID card in a pci slot and then plugging the HD into that? If so you are going to have to make sure that that card is supported by mandrake and that the module (driver) is going to be used. Then you would need to reedit /etc/fstab file to update the new harddrive configuration if the lettering system changes. and finally you'll have to change the entry in the linux boot loader so it knows what hd to boot off of, (again, only if the lettering numbers changes any).

Other then that, I don't know. Your kinda being a bit to vague for me to give you details. I guess maybe it's because I don't have experiance with ide raid.

i get to the boot loader, lets me choose my Windows drive (hda), floppy etc
(the first install knocked out my Windows MBR, so had to fix that, and then had to rescue Mandrake so i just re-installed Mandrake, and all good now with that)

yeah the drives dont change lettering with or without the RAID plugged in.

Then you would need to reedit /etc/fstab file
does fstab have info bout devices??
i know it configs mounting (of Samba shares too etc)

the RAID is 2x40 gig Maxtors, NTFS, so they dont matter with Mandrake, i just want to be able to boot up Mandrake without having to unplug my RAID drives each time.
is there a way to tell it not to probe for the drives?
funny thing is the card is still install, just its BIOS disabled as u pull the drives from it. In Mandrake it knows the cards, there, saw reference to it (as 'sil 0680' or something).

i thought i could disalble the card in the BIOS, but i can only change IRQ's
