This latest HDMI Specification supports a range of higher video resolutions and refresh rates including 8K60 and 4K120, and resolutions up to 10K. Dynamic HDR formats are also supported, and bandwidth capability is increased up to 48Gbps.

Nice to have VRR standardized for HDMI. Hope all IHVs will be supporting this, anyway AMD already supports this with current FreeSync over HDMI.

Ah, okay that makes more sense then... especially when you figure it's to eliminate tearing.

I will say that using G.Sync and Freesync it's now much easier to notice when it's not there.

Thanks you AMD for doing the work on VRR for HDMI. HDMI 2.1 is going to be great for gamers although I'll continue to use the superior DP. HDMI 2.1 for home theater is going to be a disaster. 2 meter cable lengths. Your rack will need to be next to or directly below your display device. Projectors in particular are going to be a huge issue given the limited flexibility. Fortunately their economies of scale are well behind LCD/OLED based displays giving the HDMI working group a chance to pull their heads out of their you know what. That or DP, Ethernet, or fiber gets added as a standard connection in AV equipment.

People with dedicated HT racks will be able to afford active cables when they're ripping out their old Pre/Pro and display anyway. And you don't *need* new cables until you're using a 5K+ display at high refresh.

This is Nvidia though. Coming from a more business side of things, they're reputable in making moves that are profitable.

I wonder if they attempt to screw us here by continuing to lock gsync down, or if they give up and find profits elsewhere..

I don't know many people who enjoys this gsync freesync game, so I wouldn't mind if Nvidia took a little hurting for this. It's been truly frustrating dealing with it.

Yes it is, and I'm not going to buy a display that will vendor lock me in to be able to use a feature that really should standardized by now.

As I see it, NVIDIA's goal with G-Sync is verification that it works well, not just that a compatibility box is checked. That's not a dig at AMD, but with any "open" standard, you sometimes get lumps of coal along with the diamonds. NVIDIA only wants to sell diamonds and wants us to pay for it. That's not a dig at NVIDIA. I fully expect G-Sync Certified TVs to be like G-Sync laptops - a premium will be paid even if no additional hardware is required.

I agree, with Gsync you know it works well no matter what. With Freesync you really need to dig deep into the specs of the individual displays to ensure you are getting a display with the range/features you need/want.

I expect Nvidia to delay supporting 2.1 as long as possible to give them time to come up with a way to get gsync into TV's.

If I were nvidia I'd be more afraid of a competitive amd gpu.

The 1080 is a 314 mm^2 chip. Amd is competing with a 486 mm^2 chip and more exotic hbm memory. Yet on these forums we have topics starting with "another win for amd" when the amd chip edges ahead...
