HDMI cables - best bang for your buck ??

Now that I have a HDTV and want to connect the Dishnetwork box to the tv - I noticed a price range on HDMI cables from $17 @geeks to $180 at Best Buy.

What a range! Understanding you get better shielding with higher cost cables but isn't there a sweet point between quality vs cost ?

any suggestions / recommendations on where and what appreciated

Monoprice is good for cables. I don't know about the Geeks quality but Bestbuy just plain overcharges.

digital signals don't need anywhere near the amount of specialized cableness that a low-voltage analog signal would. the cheapest cable you can find will still be up to HDMI specifications.

Digital signalling needs even less of that super high quality gold plated contact deoxygenized copper core $500 cable bullsh*t than analog ever did.

Just buy a plain hypeless cable that has the right set of connectors and a suitable length. The signal will get there - and if it does, it'll be 100% of what went into it at the source.

A THIRD thumbs-up ( if the other "eBay search for AR cables" is Mooseco ) for Acoustic Research cables.

I picked up several sets of Acoustic Research Master Series 6' Component MS231 for $25 each. I used a component connection for my Dish 811 to Dell 2405FPW since it had a component connection and I don't have a DVI KVM switch. This setup allows me to have my main computer using DVI, the other PCs on the KVM using VGA, and the Dish 811 using the Component.

If you have a DVI KVM or don't care about having to switch inputs, you can do a search for Acoustic Research PR197 to see if this is what you need. Mooseco on eBay has them for $7 BIN. Use the link to look for other types of cable ( HDMI ).

HDMI cables are digital, shielding doesn't affect image quality. You either get the image, or you don't.

However, truly shielded cables make it more likely that the image will get there over longer distances. Especially in an electrically noisy environment.

That said, passive 'shielding' on cables is generally not worth much. If the EMI is strong enough to screw with the signal, a ferrite on the cable is probably not going to help.
