HDMI in, component out

I'm looking for a new receiver but I still don't have an HDMI capable TV and would like to not have to buy one. Problem is, several of my devices (and ones I'm looking at) have HDMI only outputs.

It there a receiver out there (low end, i.e. not expensive) that will take HDMI inputs and output everything over component to my TV? I guess that would be downcoverting instead of upconverting.

Thanks

Just hook the components directly to the tv and then use optical cables for the sound hooked up to the receiver.

Might be more work, but it will work.

I have done that for the past few years since my receiver didn't have HDMI ports.

There really is no reason to run video through the receiver anyway, except for simplicity of switching sources etc. Maybe some upconvert as well, but you can live without that for now.

the problem is, some of the newer devices I want to buy only have HDMI for video. So the only way to get video is to go through the receiver and have it output component

I don't think any or at least the "cheap" receivers do HDMI to analog conversion.

Your best bet is probably a regular receiver and then adding an HD Fury or other device that can handle the display HDCP handshake and analog conversion on the HDMI output.

I'm not sure of any receivers that would do that because of HDCP protection. They'll convert analog signals to HDMI for output, but not the other way around. At least that's my understanding. So if the devices themselves are HDMI output only and your TV doesn't have HDMI, you're stuck.

I think a gadget like HDfury (http://www.hdfury.com/) can take a HDMI signal, handle the HDCP protection, and spit out a hi-def signal over a component cable. So maybe you could hook all the HDMI stuff to the receiver, and then put the converter on the HDMI cable coming out of the receiver to the TV. It's kind of steep at a couple hundred bucks though. That's all I got off the top of my head.

What is it that you want that is only hdmi??

You should have no problem getting component outputs via new blurays etc etc.

This doesn't work if you want anything but stereo sound. nearly all TVs will not properly strip out 5.1 from an HDMI input and then output them over the audio outputs on them.

You should run all of your audio/video through the receiver if possible as it is vastly simpler. And with all of the HDCP stuff in place now ensures you get the fewest conflicts and full benefits of Blu-ray HD audio sources.

Pretty sure Blu-Ray players cannot have component output anymore.
(99% sure the date was jan 2011 but might be 2012)
