HDMI signal loss

Hi. Recently upgraded to the Epson 5900 projector and am really impressed with picture quality - quite a step up from my aging Sony VPL HS-50.
I have run into HDMI problems when connecting via my HTPC using AMD hd5850 with catalyst 12.8. I use 10m HDMI cable direct to the ceiling mounted projector. I can get to WIN7 desktop but as soon as I go to windows explorer, the projector loses signal. Signal is restored if I return to desktop after 5-10 s. Movies are perfect when using JRiver media center.
This setup worked perfectly with my previous set up.
Cable quality seems to be the likely reason but why then do movies play perfectly fine.
Any ideas?

I know this might be physically difficult if the projector is already mounted, but have you tried a shorter cable? At 10m, there could be a signal loss issue, causing not necessarily a bandwidth problem (since movies are fine) but some sort of HDMI handshake loss. Using a high quality, shorter cable would at least isolate it to the current 10m HDMI cable, and would be a free (assuming you already have a spare HDMI cable) experiment. At 10m, cable quality does matter. Since your video card is a bit older, you don't need a 1.4 rated cable. I have a 10m 1.3b cable from partsexpress that works well, but their older, cheaper 1.3 cable did not work. If needed, Monoprice sells great cables at excellent prices.

As LoveMachine has said, you start to get weird handshake issues with long HDMI cables. I never was able to get a 50ft HDMI cable to fully work, and ended up going with HDMI over Cat6 instead.

In my experience with digital cable in WMC, it would work intermittently. I would be watching TV just fine, and then it would stop and display the "HDCP Support Required, it appears your device does not support HDCP." I did not experience these problems when I tested with a 5ft, 15ft, and 20ft cable extensively.
