HDMI to DVI Question

I just had my cable installed today and the receivers that the cable company has for HD do not have native HDMI ports. The only options are to use Component, which is what the installer hooked up, or to use the DVI port. Now as far as I know, HDMI is better then Component (correct me if I?m wrong) so I really want to use HDMI and in order for me to do that I would have to get an HDMI to DVI converter. My question is if I use a HDMI to DVI converter, well that downgrade the signal/quality of the image and if so would it be better to just used the Component instead? I just want to make sure that I?m using the best connections that I can. Thanks.

DVI and HDMI use the same Video signal. HDMI includes audio as well, which is the only really functional difference. Hence you just need a cable and not a converter.

Ok good to hear, just to make sure, I know DVI doesn't do sound, so will I still get sound through the HDMI cable?

Nope. If the receiver only has DVI, you will need to connect another cable for sound.

You'll just need to go DVI->HDMI to your TV (or receiver), and then either optical/coax digital cable to your receiver for audio, or if you don't have a receiver, run analog audio cables to your TV.

What company? They should have something with an HDMI port. Have you specifically asked?

I live in Illinois, it's WOW (Wide Open West), I called them up and they said that's what they had, I'll probably call them again to make sure.

Strange. There are a lot of new regulations that companies have to deal with (cable card for instance) requiring them to keep their equipment pretty much up to date. It would surprise me if they have nothing available with an HDMI connection.

When I was with Comcast the box only had DVI. Really, it doesn't make any difference other than having to run an extra cable.

Where do you live in Illinois, Liquid?
Our cable boxes have HDMI for Insight, although I just use component on my stuff.
