HDMI vs DVI

ok so I have been using DVI for years and said my new card has HDMI try it out............HOLY COW why such a difference in picture quality with same resolution...

huh? DVI and HDMI are the same when it comes to video only. Your monitor must have picture settings per input, so different brightness/contrast must be applied

DVI-D and HDMI use exactly the same video signal so if you are seeing improved visuals I'd say your old video card was to blame.

The benefit of switching to HDMI means you can use HDCI and also pass audio.

...and in some cases use deep colour (12bpc)...

That makes a rather large difference for TVs that support it.

Same signal............maybe I changed a setting somewhere and did not know it. I did have to change the input default on the monitor to HDMI...LOL Maybe another bourbon

HDMI does 1920x1080p resolution max usually(unless you find a good cable capable of doing 2560x1440p) and carries out audio. max 60hz

DVI has 2 functions. single and dual link.

DVI-I, single link has lower capable resolution.
DVI-D has a max of 4k resolution, and doesnt carriy out sound. can do 120-144hz sometimes

so it depends what you are using the connections for, and what resolution/hz your monitor is.

I don't believe that's quite correct. There are different types of DVI:
- DVI-D (digital only)
- DVI-A (analog only)
- DVI-I (integrated, combines digital and analog)

With the first and last of these options (not analog) you also have the option of both dual or single link. So you can get a DVI-I dual link cable which supports both digital and analog AND supports the higher bandwidth for a higher resolution/bandwidth.
