Can somebody please explain to me why people say SPDIF coax is better than SPDIF optical? Digital is digital, as long as there are no errors in the data transmission I could send it by telegraph or by pigeon if I wanted and it should work in exactly the same way.

Someone please explain this to me, I'm dying to understand what this is based on.
Bandwidth limitation maybe?

I think it's all a matter of opinion. The same way people say $200 speaker cables are much better than $20. Could *I* tell the difference probably not. Some people claim they can hear a difference between coax and optical. Optical is not effected by RF, so for people who have an issue with signal leak it may work better. The coax could act as an antenna whereas the optical would not.

There isn't a difference signal wise. However, TOSLink cables are by nature fragile, bend one a little too much and it's toast. I think that gives COAX a slight edge.

component video is a must.

you can turn the prog. scan on and off on my DVD player and see the difference on the screen immediately. I like the way it looks with prog. scan on better.

people say my TV has a crappy de-interlacer

it's a Panasonic 47" HDTV

DVI IS NOT > Component

It totally depends on the TV. In his case he is using an analog TV...in which case component "should" give a better picture depending on the TVs internals.

On a digital display DVI is better. But normally not on an analog set like the s500.

Just because a TV is analog (CRT's) does not mean component will give you a better picture than digital. With DVI you're still skipping one digital-analog conversion. The only blanket statement that can be made is an analog set will tend to exhibit less of an improvement, and in fact sometimes unnoticable, with the use of DVI over component.

totally depends on the entire system. I'm sure you realize that there can be no blanket statement. With many analog TVs component does indeed produce a better picture than DVI. Depends on the TV and how it routes the signal. Some even send the DVI input through another digital-analog-digital-analog conversion and component is just analog-digital-analog.

go figure.

Ouch man, that's horrible. What a way to design things. Which TV's do that D-A-D-A conversion?

DVI interface is *ALWAYS* better than component because DVI is totally lossless and has full bandwidth to pass the video signal without any loss.

How the TV or monitor implements the DVI interface is another ballgame, but DVI as signal transfer medium is ALWAYS going to be better than component.

Always.

Nice TV. I have the same TV. Like every said you have to use the component cables or DVI (the 51S500 does have DVI) to have progressive scan. You can set your Virtual HD to either 540P or 1080I. Personal, I perferred the 1080I. Don't waste you money on Monster Cable, just get some AR components cables from you local Best Buy under $30. Currently, I have my 51S500 connected to Directv HD via DVI and the HD picture looks awesome. I just wish more HD progammings are available.
