I've looked at "bigger" mounts and they all seem to carry the weight on the top rail. The bigger ones only use the bottom rail for stability and locking, not for carrying weight.

For instance, look at this "beefier" unit at Monoprice. It only holds weight from the top, and the "clip" is on the bottom.

Can someone who has actually used beefier looking mounts (not the fancy articulating ones, but simple ones like this) comment?

I've used that monoprice mount(the black version), You are correct the tv mount bars only hang on the top rail, the bottom has little latches you slide up to lock it in place but hold no weight. Having the large wall plate makes it harder for the TV to pull it from the wall but, I think this mount would be fine. My brother has one very similar and before we mounted the tv we were able to hang from it and it didn't budge.

With a couple lag bolts properly anchored into a stud it will hold the weight.

Since this is a slim mount you may need some 90 degree or 270 degree HDMI adapters to get behind the TV. The sell them at monoprice for a couple dollars.

I use this Cheetah mount. However, I only paid $25 shipped for it back in 2010, not the $37 they are asking now. This thing is absolutely rock solid - if you mount it correctly to studs, it's not going anywhere! It also offers a tilt feature.

Honestly, I don't think I would use the mount in the OP. It might work fine, but the appearance just doesn't give me any peace of mind. That's worth a few bucks to me.

It comes with three lag bolts.

It also comes with eight spacers; four each of two sizes. They are for HDTVs that don't have flat backs, but they can also be used to hold it farther away from the wall.

FWIW I had bought two of these, so here's Zap's Mini Review.

I used one, to mount my new 55" screen to the living room wall. Pretty easy to install. One of my kits (first one I opened) was missing some of the lock washers right out of sealed baggies so not lost in shipping. Some end user reviews mentions missing hardware as well. Speaking of shipping, they just tape up the box and slap a label on it. Though wide enough to span three studs at normal 16" centers, I spanned two for placement reasons (manual specifies using 2 or 3, so it was fine). With the included lag bolts it felt secure enough that if I were within the 165 pound weight limit I could probably do chin-ups on it. It has a built-in level, but I would recommend a second opinion as some end user reviews explicitly stated that their built-in level wasn't level. My integrated level was close enough to my discrete level (insert Intel IGP joke here). All you guys with man cards have tools such as levels, right?

I put a 6' Lack wall shelf underneath my TV to hold speakers and the Kinect.

Overall I think it is totally worth the $8 shipped, even if missing hardware. Mounted properly it is quite secure, and nothing else comes close to the price.
