HDTV with a ATI X600

HELLo,
My buddy just got an hp media center with an ATI X600 and he wants to play his games on a Big Ass screen and have it as high quality as possible... so I told him to buy a tv and hook it up to the hp. We went to Best Buy, bought a Big Ass HDTV and tried to hook it up to the X600 with a DVI to DVI cable. We got output to the tv, but couldn't get the resolution above 800*600 and the screen just looked terrible. So we decided to return the tv and do some more research. We called HP for help, and they eventually told us that they don't know what to do. So my question is, first can you hook up a HDTV to the X600 with a DVI to DVI cable, second what kind of tv should we get, and third if it's not possible what can I tell him to do? Any help would be much appreciated.

You need ATI's HDTV adapter to output to an HDTV

U can't hook it up directly through DVI, need to use component cables. I ran into the same problem with my 9800

Sure you can, you did it yourself (even though it looked poor) What resolutions does your display support? You may need to use a utility like powerstrip to enable a resolution that will work. ATI's YPbPr adapter like DarkKnight shows may be the best route (however that X600 may also support the less expensive cable link ATI's site doesn't have much X600 info)

Using ATI's YPbPr output makes gaming on the big screen the easiest using Center Timing Support.

IMO, the ATI x700 would be superior to the 6600GT being offered as a better choice. Nvidia cards have EDID issues with DVI connecting to HDTV's, and a transcoder would be required for YPbPr (adding another $100 to the cost at least) Obviously these recommendations are by folks not actually using them in that fashion. The x600 would at least work for what you are doing. Down the road upgrade to a x700 or x800 would be a good bet.
