It depends on which features mean the most to you ..

I have the Asrock and I really like what you get for a lot less $$ ..

The Creative sound is a lot better than Realtek .. ( IMO )

One of the Marvel controllers can be used for SSD caching .

The Asrock has 1394 .. I need that for video capture..

Maybe someone with the Rampage will tell you what they like about it..

I have neither but am in the market for a new X79 MoBo myself and it looks like the Asrock would suit my needs very well. I will have to look closer at it as it comes time.

Just to check, have you done your homework to make sure you'll benefit from spending the huge premium over a Z68 and a 2600K?

For 99% of builders the answer is no, but some think more expensive is automatically better.

I do like the Asrock a hair better.

I would still get a discrete sound card. I'm giving up on Creative and going with a CMI 8788 chip based sound card. More accurately, an HT Omega Claro II

The X79 Extreme9 comes with a discrete sound card .. It is Creative though, and may not be what you prefer.

I usually bitstream over HDMI anyways... my 5.1 THX logitech speakers are hooked up analog and I can't tell much difference.

My hearing sucks.

Creative don't bother me.

besides I thought creative was good? Yes?

I went with the Rampage IV Extreme but I struggled with this for a long time. Upon reading reviews it seemed like everyone was hotter on the rampage with its better bios and accessories.

My thought was a SBE build is going to be pricey so might as well go all out. That is honestly the reason why I went with the rampage

After doing that "...all the way" thing on an i7 920 build, I realize I could of saved some money and bought the mainstream system and saved. The 2500K is a fantastic processor and the successor to the 1156 socket platform, there is NO way I'll go with a 2011 rig after being dupped by my own mentality which you are in right now. It's financially not worth it. Only way I'll get my monies out of it is if I keep it for 4-5yrs which is unlikely

Dave Consider the big dog (x79) upgrade for the future if you:
  1. <LI sb_id="ms__id4354">invest more in games/graphics than a typical enthusiast and
  2. upgrade graphics more often than a typical enthusiast.
The your choice is only X79, if not Z77 (that is you are a typical enthusiast). The decision between the two has nothing to do with CPU choice unless you want more than a quad-core.

Seriously, when Haswell comes out, you'll just want that, and your fancy smancy mobo is now used, old, and stale. Put the money toward a better monitor, those tend to last longer.

I love the monitor idea. At that price point, is be more inclined to put that money toward some high end displays.
