He and the Chargers GM didnt get along. Losing pretty much all his coaching staff left for new teams. Gave the Chargers a chance to change coachs after he decline to add another year to his contract towards the end of the season.

I dunno.. he turned down a contract extension earlier. Something tells me he wasnt very happy there, and that this wont really bother him too much.

It wasn't the record...it was the fact that pretty much the whole coaching staff took other jobs and Smith never got along with him.

Actually it makes perfect sense, he turned down a chance to extend at the end of this next season, and pretty much ALL of the assistants left. Thus, he would completely rebuild the coaching staff, only to have it potentially completely retooled again next year when he's gone. Why waste that year?

They should've just hired a coach just for the postseason. Like bring in John Madden or something.

A Chiefs fan must have won the lottery, bought the Chargers and fired him for a being a complete failure while coaching KC. Just speculation or wishful thinking on my part of course.

Marty SUCKED!

5-13 playoffs.

That's all you need to know.

He's known around the leage as the guy who can't get it done come the post season.

WOW, this is asbsolutely shocking. Just heard about it now and rarely do I let out a reaction, but this is just crazy.

That whole staff situation is insane.

I wonder how Philip will react with a new system/coordinator/coach.

Well he did lose in the first round of the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years in SD. Lost his last 5 playoff games, 3 of which came with a team that got a first round bye. He hasn't won a playoff game since 1993 with KC.

When his teams are consistently that good in the regular season and that bad in the playoffs you have to put a lot of the blame on the coach.

playoff choker. He plays against better teams in playoffs, loses to said better teams. They're not winning a superbowl with him.

What makes you think we'd even want him? What exactly does he bring to the table besides name recognition? As far as head coaches go, Schottenheimer is as overrated as they come. Come to think of it, I don't think many "old school" disciplinarian head coaches can succeed anymore. In today's high stakes NFL, with the average player making well over $1 million, the "my way or the highway approach" just doesn't work. The players are all guaranteed their paycheck once they make the team, so these type of coaches lose the only leverage their style ever had -- fear.

you saw this coming when there was no extension signed.

Marty had to get to the superbowl to keep his job.

in his 5 years as head coach he had little consistency.

started 8-8 only to follow it up with 4-12 season. Sure that netted them Rivers and slew of draft picks and became 12-4 but lost to the Jets int he playoffs. You'd figure they'd rebound, only they missed the playoffs. In fact there was talk then of Marty getting fired then. As that season was simply poor showing.

Marty should retire. He's 63. He's been around pro football since the 60s.

as much as I agree with marty's record in the playoffs being a negative, the chargers played this wrong. they should have fired him last month and kept one of the coordinators as a head coach, namely cam cameron. this would have left more stability in the coaching staff and we would not have seen the mass exodus in the charger coaching staff that we saw in the past month.

So who do they hire? Both of their coordinators are HCs somewhere else already.
