z26.. shoot, I dont remember.. but is that a 4 banger or 6 ? if it's a six, add extra 1.5 - 2 hour..

Hmm, I think if it's a 4 banger, a good mechanic can do it in about 2-3 hours... providing he carefully cleanout the old gasket and get oem or better gasket... you want to clean out well the old one and make sure you get good contact or else the problem will happen again...

also need time to dry and stuff,

I can tell you that it may not quite be worth it. It's a big repair with a lot of labor. I know on our old Quad-4 Grand Am they wanted something like $1200 for it. The car wasn't really worth much more, so we decided to turf it.

I had one replaced on my 4 cylinder dodge shadow. Cost about $500 I'm pretty sure.

The labor is what gets you. They basically have to tear the top of the engine down. The gasket,
at least for my car, was like $50. Of course, I had the coolant changed, a new thermostat, and
the timing belt changed at the same time. That added about $60 to the bill, since they already had to remove
most of these parts anyhow.

StandardCell- I'ld say if a garage wants $1200 for a 4-cylinder head gasket replacement, somebody is getting screwed??...
Unless the Quad4 is way more complex than I think.

Just had mine replaced in a 96 Sebring 4-cyl. $1100 but that included replacing a cracked exhaust manifold, radiator flush-n-fill, oil change, timing belt, tire rotation/balance.

Mine cost at least $400 in an 89' Buick.
edit: v6 but it didn't really have anything else wrong w/ it... maybe thats why it was so cheap.

It's NOT a great car in terms of serviceability, believe me. I'm just glad to be rid of it and will never own another GM again.

I drive a '91 cavalier, and I just had this done to my car as well.

Total cost (+ labor) was around $800. They also performed a tune-up because the shop owner felt it was stupid to do such major engine work and NOT do a tune-up. That price seemed fair to me and my folks, and the shop owner is a trusted friend. Just my $0.02

On a Quad 4 expect 1100-1300 bucks. There is actually a list of times that you are charged for for every repair, weather the mechanic can do it in that time or not.
