Just built my friend a budget pc. I took the maxtor 10 gigger out of his compaq to save him more money. Pc consists of Msi K7T turbo2 mobo, 384mb pc-133, xp 1700 t-bred, Radeon 9100, onboard sound, 56k micromodem, etc.. I formatted the HD which had WinMe, installed win2k using ntfs, and installed all the latest drivers, service packs, etc... After one week of running the pc, he gets a buttload of errors. nearly every startup, he gets an error with "LSASS.exe" and the pc restarts itself. When windows boots fine, task manager reports cpu usage at 100%, and only drops back to normal after ending processes "Iexplore.exe" twice, "setups.exe", and "winhelp.exe" . Occasionally, he gets errors stating something about lacking enough memory. He told me he increased the virtual memory because it was requested for some prog, but I dun think that's the cause for any of this. I'm going to check the HDD when I get my hands on it and see if that's the problem. I'm basically thinking its the drive or some windows issue. I found somewhat similar issues listed in microsoft.com and they state to have a hotfix for them to be aquired by contacting them. Well the cheapest form of contact IIRC was about $70. I really need some advice/opinions, as I'm at my wit's end. Thanks in advance.

P.S. If i've made some boneheaded oversight, plz be gentle.

The WINSOCK2 registry key is corrupt.

You need to install REG.EXE from the Win2k Support Tools off
the Windows CD. (you can manually extract it with WinACE from
the SUPPORT cabinet file)

then, from the COMMAND PROMPT,

using REG.EXE Copy / Paste each of the following lines into the CMD Window and execute it:

REG DELETE HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2 /f

REG DELETE HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\WinSock2 /f

REG DELETE HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\WinSock2 /f

REG DELETE HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\WinSock2 /f

You may receive a 'not found' error on one or more of these commands.

3. Shutdown and restart your computer.

Followed what u said, but problems still persist. At this point I would just like to format the HDD and completely wipe the registry and start fresh. What in your opinion is the best way to go about this? I have never cleared a registry before and need specific instructions. Thanks.
