Headphone hookup question

I have a home theater set up. Cable to cable box, HDMI out to Sony DH800 receiver and HDMI out to TV. Everything feeds in/out of the receiver. Is there a way to hookup headphones to the back of the receiver? Thanks in advance.

If you had an audio monitor output in the form of either a pair of RCA jacks or a TOSLink/SPDIF output then yes you could. Unfortunately your Sony receiver does not have either of those options so the only way to hook up headphones would be through the port in the front.

I don't know why you wouldn't use the headphone jack in the front, but there is one thing you can do. You can plug a cable with r/l rca jacks on one end to a female headphone plug on the other end. Something like this:

This would get you sound...but you wouldn't be able to adjust the volume, because it would be at line level. You would then need something to adjust volume, or a set of headphones with an inline volume control. If it were me, I think I'd just use the headphone jack. But it is certainly possible.

The problem is that he has no audio outputs that will work for all of his inputs. Even if he hooked it up to one of the few sets he has it would only work for that one output and I'm not so sure it would output sound that was coming through HDMI out to RCA analog outputs.

Thanks for the replys. I had the sennheiser headphone hooked up to the cable box and they worked great. I could turn up the volume on the headphones for me and it wouldn't be to loud for the rest of the room, but they wouldn't work with this setup for watching a DVD since the cable box wasn't used. Now when I use them on the output jack it mutes the speakers so no one else can hear anything. I have the RCA jack that allows me to hook the headphones that way but couldn't find any jacks that work on the Sony receiver. Thanks again for the replies.
