Headphone jack doesn't work

When I plug in my headphones nothing happens, the sound still plays through my laptop speakers. I tried reinstalling Windows 7 and that didn't fix it. Is it a hardware issue?

My system is a Gateway P7805 FX

Try Control Panel, audio, advanced, headphones I believe.

I tried that and it doesn't fix it.

It is a hardware issue. Could be the port you plug into is not connected. Can you plug into the same port the speakers are using? If that works, then that lets the headphones off the hook. If that doesn't work, the problem is in the headphone connector wiring.
