Is this an important feature to you? What is the future of the headphone jack on phones? Is it going the way of the dodo bird?

Only if ahole companies keep copying apples stupid "courage" bullcrap. There is zero benefit in ditching the headphone jack. I don't care what bs dac is in the USB connector.

If a phone had 2 Type C ports I could consider losing the headphone jack. With just 1 port it's a flat no from me. I would have to find new headphones though, love my clip-on ones and can't stand dongles/adapters.

so a larger battery is zero benefit?

The note 9 has a headphone jack and a larger battery. Whomever told you we took the jack out to accommodate a larger battery is full of crap.

its common sense the space doesnt come out of no where. The Note9 could have been smaller if it didnt have the headphone jack. So sacrifice size or battery size same thing to me.

So here in 2018 we cant just cut the cord and enjoy untethered Bluetooth? The only time I ever need a hp jack is to use next radio, which uses the phones for an antenna, and I still listen on BT. The technology is so cheap, not sure what the big deal is.

No doubt people will tell me...

If you actually look inside a Note 9 you'd see how removing the headphone jack would have allowed for zero battery growth/phone shrinking. If you can live without any USB, Headphone, Vibration etc then yea, they could have put a bigger battery in/made the phone smaller.

Bt audio is still immature. Not enough power to headphones, sound quality, latency. If you are in the 'it sounds good enough to me' camp then Yay you. Us knowledgeable folk who like the best sound possible will continue to use the headphone jack.

yea and they wouldnt have redesigned the phone to save space if it didnt have the headphone jack? maybe not because the screen is so huge they have all kinds of extra space in the phone. I guess i should modify my statement to on phones with less than 6.5" screen the headphone jack missing could allow extra space. I actually just spent a few mins looking at the internals of the note 9.. tiny battery could have put much larger.

I complained about Apple removing it when the iPhone 7 came out and held my ground until last week. Just bought a XR as a replacement for my 6S and am extremely happy with it. The missing headphone jack is incredibly unimportant, and concerns about charging and music at the same time are overblown. The phone would last three days with my usage patterns if I didn't charge it every night.

The headphone jack is the least of it: the Note 9 houses a stylus, and yet has a larger battery than any iPhone or Pixel. People were straight up lied to if they were told that removing the headphone jack had a damn thing to do with increasing the battery size in these phones. The Pixel prior to 3 didn't even have IP68 water resistance that Samsung's phones with SD, headphone jacks and sPen cavities have always managed.

The purpose of removing the headphone jack wasn't for any consumer benefit, and it hasn't produced any real design benefit. It was simply "Let's get these fools conditioned to us removing a feature that costs us half a penny and selling them on the lack of it as its own feature. Hey look how brave we are...!"

I'm glad to see people are using their brains and voting with their wallets against terrible and lazy phone design. I fear it can't last forever though- there's just too much profit in removing features and pretending its progress. The dongle industry must be cleaning up; I know several people who've gone through multiples of them in a very short timeframe.

Maybe so, but as a not-totally-unknowlegable audiophile myself, when I want high fidelity (term dates me I know) I go to my home's audio system. Digital music in general is a step down from analog imho but if you are in the "sounds good enough to me" camp then knock yourself out. Phone audio is about convenience, not fidelity, no matter how much you invest in earbuds.

Yeah because we all lug our home stereo setups with us wherever we go instead of use the nearly 1TB audio/video system in our pockets.

These 'arguments' against a function being needlessly taken from your device for no benefit whatever to yourself just get stranger and stranger. The 'bigger battery'= HASN'T HAPPENED. Apple's in partcular are smaller than ever. You could use your lousy bluetooth or whatever headphones before, and still can with a good phone with a headphone jack. More features- most of the no-headphone jack phones had LESS features up until their latest models.

NONE the arguments actually panned out. It was just to save some money, and have you buying dongles. At least own up to it and stop acting like it was everyone else who fell for a scam.

Now you're just being perverse. Of course you're not taking your home system on the road, and that's my point exactly. It's about convenience. But my critics are talking like they're discriminating audiophiles (and I'm sure they are), and to that cause they'd rather be tethered within 3 feet of a device to achieve a slightly higher degree of fidelity. I don't know, maybe they spend their days in a chair, but I have a job, I work out, I recreate. I do housework. Do any of that with wires to your head and I personally just don't find it practical or comfortable.

And the bottom line? As has been stated previously, if it sounds good enough to you, I support everyone's right to do it their way.

I don't even care about "hifi". Good enough is good enough, but I want to be able to plug my phone up to pretty much anything made in the last 70 years and get sound out of the phone. It's proven technology that could hardly be cheaper to implement. A quality case sticker would add more cost to the phone, and anyone that doesn't want to use it doesn't have to. It detracts 0% from the function of the phone. There's only benefits by including it.

Ive got a bunch of Bluetooth headsets, they all have flat batteries.

Wired FTW!

Options are good. With wired I can use my decent headphones plus I can still use Bluetooth in the car if I want. Having the headphone jack can only be a plus, it's not like it stops you using Bluetooth if you want.

Yours was a silly snark bringing up your home audio system in a discussion about phone headphone jacks.

Nothing you mention has a thing to do with the option of a wired connector on your device, since as stated, it takes nothing from your use of BT headphones if that's your choice.

10 bucks says you don't hook your home stereo up to crappy BT speakers vs good wired ones and pretend its the best sound quality.

Why even snark in this conversation when all it is is contradiction and hypocritical statements?

And yes, I can hear the difference in quality in decent wired headphones vs most BT headphones. I also hate BT audio in my car vs wired- but thankfully that's mostly via USB connection nowadays. But because I use that doesn't mean I snark annoyingly at other people who use an Auxiliary connector in their cars. That's still a better solution than BT and its still a good thing the jack is there.

Despite Bluetooth audio coming a long way in quality since when it first appeared (especially with codecs like AptX), it is not as good as a good 'ole fashioned wired connection.

If I'm exercising or in the yard doing work, I generally use my headphones in Bluetooth mode, and the quality is pretty respectable. However, if I am listening to them in my house at places like my home office, I have them plugged in. My PC has Bluetooth and they sound pretty decent, but a wired connection is still simply the best quality. Hopefully at least some cell phone companies continue to offer a headphone jack as I would personally have a very tough time buying one without that feature.

The XR battery is over 50% larger than the 6S, at least get the facts right in your angry rants.

Also, why would I care about $9 for a dongle? Just buy AAPL and you'll make hundreds of times that back like the rest of us.

The XR has a 2.9mAh battery!
Losing the headphone jack didn't gain anything for battery capacity. The Note 9 has a 4000mAh battery and a headphone jack, sPen slot, mSD and IP68.

The rest of the iPhone lineup have even smaller batteries.

You're simply buying into a lie if you believe removing the headphone jack had diddly to do with Apple's battery sizes. If it did, then Apple's designers blow since plenty of other makes can figure out how to do larger capacity batteries without removing features.

And LOL @ why would I want to pay $9 to have a stupid dongle hanging off my phone, rather than *nothing* for a proper jack and no need for dongles. Again, bizarre arguments for a lack of choice.

BTW Apple just released the new iPad pros not only minus headphone jack but minus the lightning port as well.

So that should tell you that are living the "oh what's $9?" dongle-life: they'll even yank that rug right out from under you at a moment's notice.
