Headphones worth buying? 7.1 ?

I am wondering which headphones for the PC would be a better buy?

Are those 7.1 surround sound headphones any good, do they actually provide surround sound and make a noticeable difference?

Should i opt for a new set of speakers or some good headphones/headset?

On my current pc build I am using onboard audio... many years before that i had a 5.1 surround speaker system hooked up to a SB Live card.... ditched the SBLive a few years ago and just used the onboard sound for my needs.

I often wonder if my SB Live sounded better or performed better than my current on board sound... and if such is the case should i be using that instead.

IMO, "surround" headphones are a gimmick. Go with a reputable brand known for making high quality audio equipment, such as (but not limited to) Sennheiser, Grado, or Beyerdynamic. Avoid "popular" brands such as (but not limited to) Bose, Skull Candy, or Beats. With those, you're generally paying extra for the name, and getting shafted when it comes to sound quality.

There are a lot of types of headphones, and you should do some research to determine what's wright for you. Ex. noise canceling, closed vs open monitor

As for whether or not you want speakers or headphones, I'd say that's highly subjective. A good set of 'cans will generally have better sound quality at a given price point, but not everyone likes wearing a heavy clamp on their head all day. Speakers allow you to share what you're watching, but sometimes (as in the case of neighbors) you probably don't want to.

Stick with your onboard sound.
