OP (et al):

So what's the best strategy, short of going into your local CC's every Sunday to physically look for these items? I called 1x already and they said "Oh, that's last year's model... we have the newer one though".

If what the OP said is true, then most local stores WON'T have these, they are probably in warehouses and won't be distributed until the local stores want to have a nice sale?

I was there on Saturday picking up my laptop , and looked at the Alpine head units. Not any amazing savings or baragin priced deals to be seen, btw the price tags were printed on 9/18.

Yeah, that sounds right. THe one in Indiana has a small sale on Alpine stuff, but nothing over $20 or $30, that too is on the expensive models, $300 and up I think.

How much markup do they have on their items? Maybe we can haggle them down to a low rate... they'd rather sell them to someone than send them back.. at least I'd hope that

What made you come to that conclusion? There are TONS of reasons why it could be happening...

Just to start, maybe there were issues with CC, maybe CC just decided it's better off with another company so now Alpine found BB, maybe Alpine did feel BB would provide more business, etc. There are many reasons besides one company doing more business than another.

You might be able to get them to come down on the open box or display items, but not much (if any) on new stock.

Markup is different for different items in the store, cell phones were ridiculous for example (bought a $200 phone for ~$65). Ironically enough, I bought 1 and only 1 car audio related item and it was an Alpine head unit. It sold retail for ~$300, I got it for ~$200 if I remember correctly. But that was over 5 years ago, so I really don't know about the markup now.

I talked to a guy who worked in car audio, and he at least seemed like he might have some idea. He said that circuit city is getting rid of alpine since they couldn't ship enough units to meet their demands. (?) He mentioned that they were probably going to get another high end brand like clarion pro audio.

He said that the big sales would probably be after christmas. I think this makes sense because they will sell these until 12 31, then they will need to get rid of the demo units that they can't send back.

also in a related note the cc in downers grove il had a sale on sub boxes, 7.50 for a .75 cu ft sealed enclosure

My friend manages a CC road shop. He told me about BB carrying the Alpine line and that CC is dropping them because of that. He also said that they don't need to blow it out because it still moves. So as far as the shops in So Cal are concerned, I'd be surprised if they blew out Alpine stuff. I told him to LMK if any of the higher end hu's went on sale or the better subs or amps. At the prices the op got on his stuff, the employees will buy all of it. So I think the only way you will get in on this deal is if corporate drops the prices and the employees dont find out. So it's another YMMV deal.
Anytime items go way below cost....

Now if only I could get a deal a nice Brahma sub.

I stopped by my local CC yesterday, and they had the $399 CDA-9831 deck marked down to $249. I don't know if that's as low as it'll go or not. I'm debating whether to pick one up.
