Heads Up: Scythe Ninja Rev B Owners

I recently purchased the following hardware:

Intel Q6600 with G0 stepping
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3P LGA 775 motherboard
Scythe Ninja Rev B heatsink

After buying the ninja revb in large part due to the following review...

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article251-page6.html

...I found several threads that suggest the unit has issues with the standard mounting bracket and LGA 775 mobos:

http://www.silentpcreview.com/.../viewtopic.php?t=39352
http://www.silentpcreview.com/.../viewtopic.php?t=42208

It seems the clip on mounts aren't as secure as the old-fashioned bolt down and plate method. :Q

For any of you folks that are using the same mobo as mine or any similar LGA 775 board with an Intel C2D or C2Q processor and the ninja rev B, how are things going? Did you use the standard hardware, after-market mounts or did you end up RMA'ing everything? :brokenheart:

Also, what kind of temps are you getting? I really don't want to mount this HS if it turns out that it won't play nice with my mobo. Some of the company representatives on the Scythe forum seemed dismissive, something I didn't take as a good sign, but perhaps they are working on a solution.

In the mean time, anyone that has an LGA775/New Intel CPU/Scythe Ninja Reb B, please share your thoughts, tests and final decisions. Thanks!

whats the heads up for??
That heatsink has been out for quite a while and I have never heard of issues concerning mounting excpt from people who were not that experienced in mounting heatsinks!!

They possibly are dismissive because you really need to mount the heatsink for yourself and see what your temps are.....

Nobody can tell you what results you will get unless you mount the heatsink.

Results for all heatsinks vary.....thats why I say there is NO one best of the best heatsink!

Peace!!

Regarding the newbies out there, yes, I have to agree. There are sadly lots of people who do not know how to properly mount HS or apply thermal paste for instance. That being said, I have read several instances where this HS was causing issues even among enthusiasts--people that have mounted many, many heatsinks. I can chalk it up to user error when I see folks that are new to self-building having issues, but when a handful of old-timers have problems, it makes one pause. Any other commentary will be more than welcome.

It's NOT just the Ninjas! The coolers themselves are okay, but...

I hate the Scythe universal mounting system! :|

Been saying it for over a year, but it never hurts to remind ppl...

I kept the universal mounts, complaints and all, but stuck the Mine 3 on my wife's machine, so...

This Mine 3 came with one of the 4 (corner) clips mounted upside down from the factory. That soured me on Scythe, right out of the chute!

They sent me another clip assembly, in less than a week, but this universal mount requires Herculean strength and fingers of iron to pop into place!

I've taken this HSF off n' on about 10 times, and it doesn't get any easier. Lessoned learned, however! Gave me a true appreciation of how tough mobos really are...

In a perfect world, an angry mob would take the designer of this foul contraption out into the alley, behind the Scythe headquarters, and put a bullet behind his right ear!

Harsh! I'm wondering if one couldn't easily take the metal mounts from one of Scythe's earlier models (or even a generic mounting kit?) and use it with the REV B?

By the way, once you did get it on the CPU, were the temperatures decent? I can live with a pain in the rear mounting system as long as the performance is there.

If you're talking about the Scythe Mine 3, yes, it works great, and it's uber quiet!

Don't believe me? Check out this HSF review from June 2007...

Personally, I'm calling BS on the Scythe Mine 3 beating a Tuniq Tower 120! I'm running both as we 'speak', and the Mine 3 is no Tuniq! Take MY word on this...

The larger point is, the Scythe Mine 3 craps in tall grass with the big dogs, so to speak!

This is the same reply found in your thread over at HardForum.

It works great for me. In fact, its slightly better than my Tuniq, lol. Its been workin since Jan'07.

E6400, GA-965P-DS3, 2GB DDR2-800, Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B, CM Stacker TC01

idle, load: cooler, all measured with a 22°C ambient room temp.

E6400 @ 2.1Ghz (1.32v):
32°C, 64°C: Stock
21°C, 42°C: Ninja
22°C, 42°C: Tuniq

E6400 @ 3.2Ghz (1.33v):
40°C, 73°C: Stock
28°C, 49°C: Ninja
30°C, 50°C: Tuniq

E6400 @ 3.6Ghz (1.50v):
35°C, 56°C: Ninja

My mounting bracket was circular, so it didnt quite fit right. I had to use a dremel to straighten out one of the edges, because some capacitors were in the way on my DS3. I believe most people's problems with the Ninja is they aren't mounting it properly. If you see temps of 50°C idle at stock, something isn't right (for c2d anyway), lol.

I've got a couple homies with similar setups, and they experience the same temps as I do. One of them built his system with the DS3, E6600, and the Ninja Rev.B in June, but his mounting bracket was straight, not circular, so no modding needed. He gets similar temps to me. His works fine, too. He's since changed to the DS3R, btw.

I don't think the Ninja Rev.B is much harder, if at all, to install than the stock Intel HSF. The Tuniq and Ultra 120 are a bit easier to install, imo. I hear the Zalman is the easiest, installation-wise, but it isn't as cost effective as the others. I tried my uncle's Ultra120, and it was similar to the other two (the eXtreme wasn't out back then).

My only gripe with the ninja is that it blocks a ram slot with its fan. So, you have to remove the fan in order to remove the ram. The fan is easy enough to uninstall/reinstall, but I'm just lazy like that, lol.

Thanks for the double post NURD, just trying to get as much feedback on this as possible. I'm not a big fan of reseating HS's, so I'd like to set it and forget it the first time.

I can add that It will not dance with Biostar 6100-M9 (mATX, s939).

I need to relocate those caps, somehow - or sell the Ninja
