There is so much stupidity in this thread it's not funny.

You Americans need to stop talking about UHC because you have no idea how it works.

There is some serious ignorance from the rightys and leftys on here.

Obviously UHC care is different everywhere but it works best in places the the UK and Australia.

I'm in Australia so I'll give you the rundown.

Firstly, and most importantly, there are still private health care providers here! You don't HAVE to use UHC.

If you have a heart attach or somethin like that you will be taken to a public hospital and you will get world class help. RPA hospital in Sydney has the greatest heart attach survival rate in the world, bar none.

If you are in a car crash they will take you to a public hospital. They will patch you up, but once you're alive and well enough they will boot you out the door. If you need plastic surgury cause your face is smashed or anything like that you have to go on a waiting list. You could be waiting a while to. Maybe 1-2 years.

Now, if like me, you have private health cover you just go straight to a private hospital and get the plastic surgury.

Obviously anything elective is gonna cost ya in the public or private system. No free nose jobs here.

This is why you need both private and public hospitals.

Any of you leftys saying get rid of private, you're idiots. You want to wait 2 years to get a hip replacement?

And you rightys who bitch about not wanted to be at the mercy of UHC, JUST GET PRIVATE HEALTH COVER!

Oh yeah, my private heathcare costs me $12 a week. UHC takes a lot of the strain of the private sector which makes it cheaper.

And last, UHC means collective barganing on drugs. Some drugs arn't covered by UHC, but their still cheap as shit.

 except you forget the fact that YOU pay the gov't for it via taxation. The issue here for us "righties" is that we don't want or need the gov't to be our nanny. The other issue comes in with the risk pool problems. Why should I not be able to be in a risk pool that more closely resembles me instead of the mush sum of 300 million?

We spend less per capita on health care than you and get just as good care.

EDIT - But I know what you mean. I consider myself a libertarian, but health care is one place I differ.

There are public schools, police, fire departments. Why not have healthcare, which is a nessesity, public aswell?

I don't care what you think the relative care is - it doesn't change what I posted.

Ok.

You want to be free from government regulation right? Hell, I sure do.

But you're happy to have to the government regulate the supply side of heath care. They deside who can be doctors etc. They put massive regulation is place so they you have to study for 7 years to be doctor or whatever. This causes restriction on the supply.

But when it comes to the demand end you say "Oh, I don't want goverment regulation."

So its like

"Oh hi, we're the government, we going to to regulate this industry and control who can be doctors, but they can charge whatever they like"

"But they're charging us too much and we can't afford it! Can't you step in Mr Goverment?"

"Oh no. We don't want to be a nanny government and regulate."

You can't have it both ways.

I'm not part of it. I want to go back towards a REAL insurance system regarding health care. Where real costs are visible to people so maybe...just maybe people will take their health more seriously and not chase the latest pill they saw on tv to fix their lack of self control/responsibility.

My point was the you can't stand back and say "I don't want a nanny government" when the goverment is regulating the industry.

I believe in the free market. The goverment needs to back the fuck off. Stop regulating supply of doctors, and other healthcare professionals, and the price of health care will come down. Then we wouldn't need UHC.

In the meantime the goverment needs to look after the poor guys who are getting screwed.

Saw a chart the other day tha showed the cost of non regulated procedures(lasik, consmetic surgery,...) costs were growing at the less than the rate of inflation. Compare that to the rest of the medical services.

It's not because they are unregulated, it's because they are elective. It's easier to jack up the prices if a procedure is necessary for the customer's health or survival. You have a motivated buyer.

Does your country have 10s of millions of illegals who would just suck the system dry and potentially 10s of millions more waiting for the second UHC passes? We have a unique situation in this country because of the large illegal poplulaton. Add to that the most unhealthy population in the world and you can't have UHC with out either doubling taxes or bankrupting the country or both.
