Today I use the headphones with a low volume setting, just enough to hear without bursting my eardrums. Then again, I had damages on my right ear from my youthful years D:

Curious if loud music with very minimal distortion would cause the same hearing loss too. Years age, bro had a car stereo system that would vibrate the hairs on your arm but it didn't "sound" that loud. He said it was because of little distortion.

no surprise. grossly overpowered car audio and head phones are cause/effect. If you work with air impact tools or rotary hammers/drills/carpentry/ heavy industry and don't use hearing protection you will suffer permanent hearing loss. And think about your kids while you drive around with your glass pak cherry bomb/baritone mufflers that sound like a dump truck and ear bleed car audio.

I stand next to people in the subway with music so loud it leaks out and you hear a cacophony of low and high-pitched buzzing coming from all directions. It is VERY annoying and frankly it doesn't surprise me this is happening.

As someone I know put it, "music is supposed to go INTO your ears." I bought a pair of Shures and haven't looked back. Not only does it let me play music at a lower volume, it keeps all of the noise out.

Think I remember something about stem cells and growing ear hearing things back eventually. Got my fingers crossed as I slowly eff up my hearing blasting stuff in the car with windows down.

Yeah, I'll frequently come across people at the gym whose music is turned up so loud that I can make out the lyrics of the song they're listening to in their earbuds. That's just not healthy, and I wouldn't at all be surprised that it's leading to hearing loss.

Imagine that - loud music 2 millimeters away from your ear drum causing hearing loss.
I wonder if breathing in smoke directly from a burning object will hurt my lungs too...

This is no news.
I listen at the lowest volume possible (has to be enough to hear well and cover some noises, but I don't like not being able to hear the ambient sounds, like cars coming etc.)

I have tinnitus in both ears and hearing loss in one ear.
I attribute it to my car audio system when I was 16-20.
At first I thought it was genetics, because my dad has the same issues.
Recently I asked my grandparents and none of them have the issues.

Over the years I've done permanent damage to my ears. Going to clubs and concerts were probably what caused the most damage. I bought a 2 pairs of 15" cerwin vegas and a powerful receiver for my house a few years back. I used to listen to it so loud when we had parties that light bulbs would blow out because of the bass. I also delivered pizzas when I was younger, and had my car system pumping way too loud for long periods of time.

Now I have a constant ring in my ears, and don't do so well on hearing tests. I don't listen to music as loud any longer, usually less than halfway with headphones. Looking back, I wish I had a better reason for it than stupidity (like a loud work environment or something).

Oh well, live and learn.
