I sailed through the tutorial easy enough, but I'm getting curbstomped any time I try to play against other players.
Have you tried playing against the Expert AI? It isn't going to be as good as some players will be, but they might give you a run for your money. I was showing a friend Hearthstone on the iPad, and I just played a weak Priest deck (I have very few extra cards, no silences!). The biggest problem with that priest deck is a lack of strong minions, and the Hunter expert had some pretty good ones. He only had one minion on the board, and I said that I didn't want to waste the Sunreaver's +1/+1 battlecry. So, I ended up not playing any minions that turn.
Big mistake! I essentially gave up my board presence and practically gave my opponent the game at that point.
Also, something else to keep in mind is that while a 0 cost card may look good, keep in mind that you can only have 30 cards at once. You also only get one card per turn (apart from any draw mechanics) and 3/4 to start with. A 0-cost 1/1 Wisp may sound like a good "extra", but it can actually take up a slot that you could use for something more potent. In other words, a good Arena draw or a good deck setup is important. However, even the best deck can be beat by awful draw luck. When it comes to choosing a card, a good handy rule for choosing a card is whether the average of the attack and health is at least equal to the mana cost. That's why the Chillwind Yeti is so popular; it's a 4-cost 5/4 (or is it 4/5... I can never remember!). Charge cards tend to be frowned upon at times because they usually have very low health values; however, they can be good if you can get them behind a taunt wall and you're not playing a Mage.
