I think the highest I reached on ladder was rank 8 with a deathrattle priest but then the month ran out. I've since stopped playing priest as I have his golden portrait now.
I think to climb the ladder, you have to pick a deck and stick with it, whereas nowdays I usually play the hero I need to to finish the daily quest. Also, I'm still missing a lot of good cards, esp. GvG ones and that's a big handicap at the higher ranks.

Percentage of cards I'm still missing in my collection (2 copies of each):
classic common 6.92%
rare 45.06%
epic 75.68%
GvG common 6.25%
rare 35.14%
epic 90.00%

so a long ways to go yet to complete my collection. Not to mention the legendaries...

So where did you get those stats from?

So yeah, this didn't work out too well for him:

He was using the damn Druid outlast deck (i.e. force you to card draw, silences, and tons of heals, whereby he simply outlasts you because you run out of cards before him and he keeps on healing). Too bad that deck doesn't work well against my shaman deck. He used 4 silences on my sludge beltchers, carnie bloodhoof, and maexxna, and previously used both his naturalizes, and played a coldlight oracle in one round to force me to lose a card (lost a 3/3+taunt bear). He had also played both his 6 damage+draw card spells and a big game hunter (on Rag). At that point I felt it was safe to play KT+a resurrect (my maex was still on the board). He had no answer on the 2 KT's. So I plop down a faceless manip on a KT, and a mana storm to clear his board. Still no answers on the KT's, so I plop a sea giant and resurrect him (which filled my board with giants). He continued to simply heal and put up taunts (taunts went out right after the screenshot). He died the next round when I silenced one of the taunts, killed the other, and killed him.

i've been playing for about a week now. my opinion of the game is more positive than when i first checked it out.

for the 1st couple days, it was rough just getting spanked by superior cards, despite playing well. grinding several decks at once didn't work out well either. so i've focused on my mage ("custom mage") and warlock ("really shitty warlock"). the mage is pretty ok but the warlock is either i get a quick start and finish him or i get my ass handed to me.

it's frustrating being a new but good player and getting spanked by chumps with golden net decks. i make very few unforced errors, my mastery of constructed is coming along (i guess i'm close to 50% with my mage) although my arena drafting needs work (1-3 is normal, today i went 3-3 with a deck i did not have confidence in). but all these mech decks and paladin clones have got me bummed out. yesterday i got keel-hauled by a pirate deck in 5 turns and i considered it a refreshing change.

another thing i found disappointing was experienced, spendy players pitching games to de-rank so they can run up a win streak against noobs. why does blizzard reward this trolling and puppy kicking?

They announced BRS will be the next release and it will be as an adventured mode one. Looks to be identical to naxx except a card back reward will be added for clearing all the heroic encounters.

This is why I stopped playing. I only played for a few weeks, and I know I was making mistakes, but found that the better player didn't always win, and whoever has the best deck has a ridiculous advantage. I understand why that kind of game appeals to some people, a game where the best player doesn't always win is not for me.

Yeah, I would say it would definitely suck to be starting out now. While the basic cards "work", the cards available to people who have been playing since the beginning can usually just outdeck them no matter how good they are. It still can't fix "broken" decks or really bad RNG.

I just had a match that I should probably have lost due to horrible RNG on my Druid with the card draw (I did not have the coin, and after dumping Rag, KT, and Stalag, I got 2 Ironbarks and Deathwing to start... in other words, out of the 6 cards I saw, I had 5 of the 6 greater than 5 mana cost cards from my deck). But Deathwing for the win Even though I had KT in my hand still, right after the mage cleared my last minion (my second Ironbark) and unloaded his hand of minions onto the board (he had 6 out there) with 1 card in his hand. He wasn't expecting Deathwing

For my reward, I bought a classic deck (which by the way give way more in dust value than the GvG decks), getting 1 epic, 2 golden rares, and 1 golden common (all but the epic was dusted, as I only had 1 of that epic), and then crafted "Sneed's Old Shredder". It was a toss up between him and Dr. Boom. The fact that Dr. Boom is vulnerable to big game hunter put Sneed over the top for me in that decision (and the fact that a silence would most likely be used on it, which makes my Priest deck that much more deadly).

Wow I must be the only person that still plays this huh.

I think I finally have a warlock deck that I like. It can still get beat by a few rush decks (especially a good draw mechwarper, but then again, just about everything loses to that except maybe a good draw priest with coin+0mana 4 health all+soulpriest). The deck has just enough defense to hold people off before its minions just take over and pound the crap out of people. I felt bad for the druid using the forced card draw deck. He got me to lose 4 cards before I could do anything about it (first time he showed he was using that deck). He got me to 1 hp, while he had full health + 8 armor, and my minions finally took board control and got taunts going (to prevent his direct attack). He had previously used all his non-minion direct attack spells (both swipes, both dark wispers, both starfires... I guess he might have had a moonfire, but I doubt it since no one uses them as there are so many more useful cards). I had a 2 yeti's (1 damaged), 1 mechanical yeti, a voidcaller, and creeping fern (3/6+taunt) out on the board, while he had only a piloted shredder (that he just played after I cleared his side the previous round). So I kill the shredder with my voidcaller knowing it would play a floating watcher when it died, and then I played 2 enhanco-mechano's Two of the yeti became windfuried+divine shielded, the other taunted+divine shielded, and the floating watcher windfurried+taunted, the creeper divine shielded... It didn't end well for him.

I play quite a bit. Usually play control warrior or mid range pally. Got to rank 7 last season without much trouble. Though I did start climbing a week before the season ended.

i've whipped my warlock deck into shape. my last upgrades were shadowflames in for hellfires, mortal coils in for drain lifes. i'm using hearthstone deck tracker, so i'll have a meaningful win% in a few days. hopefully demons will get better in the future :/

i've embraced the f2p challenge, and now i can hold my own against players with much more complete card libraries. in most of my losses, i fight like hell and the game could have gone either way.

I'm about to fucking throw my PC off the window with this game...

I can win 14+ games in a row, easy effing shit...and then I lose every damn games I play until i'm back to my starting point...rinse and repeat...WTF?!??!!?

I really like this game but it's getting to a point where I have to make a decision: continue and punch the walls/swear to every gods that don't ever existed (I hate plastering btw) or stop and try to never look back (try asking this to a meth addict)...

It could very much have to do with times you choose to play. See if there is any correlation between time and streaks. Since the ranks are mostly controlled by how much you play, you can have varied skill between and the ranks.

It's just variance. If it bothers you in hearthstone, you should never even think about playing poker

Well, I picked up a GvG deck today and for once didn't get utter crap out of it (have had a total of maybe 2 decks give me more than the 1 rare 4 commons). It had 2 rares and 1 legendary (although a almost crap worthless legendary, Blingtron 3000). I am debating keeping it around. It "might" be useful in a rogue deck late game combo'ing with Sabotage, or possibly a Harrison Jones (if I ever get one of them). Although I am not holding my breath on it being useful in many matches...

Wonder why it is that all the top ranked players use harrison... Maybe they like the challenge?

i don't know, do they use him? he's 5/4 i thought he was 5/2. anyway, if i had him i don't think he'd be worthwhile for me at low ranks. i already carry an ancient healbot and mind control tech as dead cards at least 50% of the time.

Actually wasn't quite sure that was still the case, as I mostly only follow just one player, but the next couple of names i thought of also used it.

He didn't need harrison in that particular game, but he normally has it in his decks. I stopped looking after these three, but kolento uses it, so everyone should! #Kolento boys?

Harrison is a great card and has been in and out of the high level meta for a long time.

The problem of course is that he has bad stats for the mana cost, and if your opponent isn't a weapon class there is virtually 0% chance to get anything from his battlecry. Even still, a 5/4 body on the board must be dealt with by your opponent, so its not always a complete loss if you have to play him. As long as he takes at least 1 enemy minion/spell with him on the way out, you have at least maintained equal card advantage.

The reason he is played is that he can be a massive game changing swing at times. Imagine you're a priest, you are low on cards and your opponent is in control. Now he slams down his finisher - Tirion. One SW and Harrison Jones later, you've taken out his most powerful threat, and drawn 3 more cards in the process.

The same can be said of Gorehowl and Doomhammer, though both have fallen out of use (somewhat), and mostly because of Harrison Jones. Even if you only get to use it on a weapon with 1 swing left (truesilver, deaths bite, etc), its still a huge swing in game tempo. You've taken something away from the enemy, while putting a relatively strong body on the board, AND drawn at least 1 card in the process.

Point it, yes, many pros run Harrison Jones.
