I'm looking forward to playing this game but everything I've read says thats its been a very buggy release. Has anyone played it and can tell me if they have had any problems? Lately it seems everything I buy is a bug fest. I picked up Arma 2 that was just a buggy mess.

I picked this up on release day, and it has been somewhat of a nightmare. The games runs VERY slow in full-screen, and the "fix" for right now is to run in windowed mode. This may have been fixed in the past couple weeks, but it turned me off for the time being.

There are some others major bugs that affect gameplay as well, and I would recommend waiting a few months to let the code fixes come out.

It is a great game, but Paradox should have waited a few more months and fixed more bugs prior to release.

Thanks for the quick reply. I own both HOI 1 & 2 and think they were great. I'd stick with HOI 2 but in true great gameplay can't save that old 2d interface. I play at 1920X1200 and its a pain. I'm hoping HOI 3's 3D interface will help change that.

Well the 1.2 patch was released last week and did clear some things up.

But the game will still bog down when "the war" actually starts, just not as bad as before. The solution is to save, exit, and reload.

There are a lot of issues if you want to play a "historical" game, for instance there's pretty much a 0% chance that an AI controlled GER will ever initiate Barbarossa.

I'm still having a lot of fun with it though, and some of the mods help to sort the more egregious problems out. Unfortunately, the next patch won't be out until early Nov.

Edit - ARMA II is the most worthless game I've ever spent $50 bar none, just terrible.

The Hearts of Iron games are fantastic.... after a few patches. Paradox games tend to be extremely buggy on first release, but they are also one of the best in the business for updates and post-release support. By patch 1.3 or so, the games are great.

The core of why the game runs so slowly is that Paradox chose to code in LUA. They wanted to make a highly moddable game because, as any PI fan knows, the mod community can put out some great work. LUA is a horrible choice however for all the AI scripting because it takes so much longer for function calls to process than in does in compiled C (past PI games).

So I don't hold out much hope for any futher improvements in speed - at least nothing too drastic. The limiter is the choice of coding language not the coding itself. I'm sure mods can help by reducing the amount of AI decisions per cycle, but then you are sure to lose some of the game's complexity.
