Watch some Youtube for good tips. Quill18 and Arumba are pretty good at these types of games.

+1 for Quill18. He's the first youtuber I go to when I want to learn how to play a new strategy game.

Probably worth checking Shenrryr2 out if you can stand his commentary, he seems to be one of the few large Youtubers who explain their overall strategy along with the moment to moment decisions. DDRJake certainly gets an honorable mention too.

Note: this opinion is based on EU4 and not HoI4 as I have little interest in the "mad dash" of HoI4 and much prefer the "slow burn" of EU4. Although I assume that won't effect the way their videos are presented.

I've heard of DDRJake, never watched him though. Shenrryr is good though.

I will also throw out DasTactic, a likable, low key Ozzie who does excellent Let's Plays and tutorial videos, and goes in-depth with game mechanics.

And for HoI Let's Plays, few folks have done more than AlexLifeson1985
He doesn't do much in the way of tutorials, so his videos are geared more for folks already with a decent grasp on how to play, but if you want to see how certain strategies and things might pan out in your game, he's definitely worth a watch. His videos almost always get me in the mood to start a new game.

On new game releases he typically publishes like 5 videos per day, to 'ride the hype'.

Took me awhile to get decent at EU4. This game looks more complex and Micro-Managey, which doesn't appeal to me right now.
It isn't as bad as the prior games. Giving orders to your generals is pretty effective and cuts down on micro managing. You can assign fronts and have new units be sent to them automatically as they are made. I've played quite a bit since I've gotten it and it is way better than prior versions.

Ya, been watching some Playthrus and it seems manageable. I previously watched HOI3 vids and they were a mess in comparison.

Yes, HoI4 is less micro-managey, you can use plans and let the AI manage each unit. Obviously this doesn't work well in MP as micromanaging still beats plans, but against the AI it's just fine.

One thing they really need to add is the ability to assign a front (or call it something else if need be) to a coastline, or section of one. Right now that, combined with the ai's tendency to invade all over the place, makes coastal defense have too much micromanagement.

On the plus side, at least neutral nations getting mil-access cause they happen to share an enemy will change, supposedly with the next patch.

You cant set a front on the coast, but all you have to do to guard it is garrison coastal provinces. Works just as well. AI will respond quickly to amphibious invasions.

Technically that wouldn't be a front I guess but as Xcrown said you can garrison the coast and the AI does a good job.

I'd like the ability to assign fresh units to garrison duty automatically like you can assign new troops to fronts.

I just picked up this game. I started watching Arumba's "Soviet Steamroller" series last night and for a history nerd (especially military) like myself, who's an information/knowledge junkie in general, the game looked cool so I decided to get it. I've played a little of Crusader Kings 2 (again, turned on to it after beginning Arumba's tutorial) but not too much yet.

So now I'm gonna watch a bunch of YouTube vids and see if I figure out a thing or two. Lookin forward to it!

The only thing I don't like about their games in general, so many of the historical trigger points that are important in the game and could be such a wonderful in game encyclopedia type presentation but are left up to the player to randomly stumble across.
