If someone were to install a Heat Sink on a new AMD Athlon 64 3700+ and the Heat Sink does not work. How long would it take for the CPU to get Damage? I am having a local store build my system and they just called me and said my Heat Sink is not working at all. I am very worried that it could have damaged my brand new Athlon 64 3700+. Am I in big trouble? I got the Heat Sink from Newegg and it was DOA! So they are sending me a new one. But I am really worried. The guy at the PC shop said he wont know if the cpu is damaged until he gets a new Heat Sink. Why did this have to happen to me?????? I was all happy this morning because I thought my new PC was going to be ready to pick up today. This I get this bad news.

Is it the Heatsink (IE metal block) or fan? I really doubt that unless there was some sort of gross negligence that you could break a heatsink as it's typical all metal. What kind of heatsink is it?

Likely what they meant by not working is not fitting properly or making good contact....If they are smart they wet into bios immediately and watched temps and shut it down or the defult setting sof the bios of most boards would have shut it down at 75c or less....

No they said the Fan was not spinning at all! The Board is a EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard. Does it have that option?

Well then I would expect them to shut it down immediately and just replace the fan.....Seems simple enough...Also they should have checked they had the fan plugged in...most are now running the fans off of 4 pin molex but still have to have it plued into the cpu header on the board to start up....

*Most* technicians would shut down imediately, then test the fan by plugging it into another system to see if it spins up. If it doesn't, well you've got a DOA fan. I'd think that their store would carry at least *something* for S939 since it is quite popular and S754 seems to utilize the same heatsinks too.

A64 has thermal protection, it will shut itself down and won't burn up like an Athlon XP would, so the only thing I would be worried about is they seem to be slightly incompotent at building PC's...and as somebody else mentioned, if cool and quiet was enabled, and the CPU was cool enough..the fan would be off..

How often would a Heat Sink be DOA?

I am starting to think you guys maybe right about the cool and quiet thing.

Not the heat sink...That is the copper/ aluminum block...The fan is DOA...We Say Heatsink & fan or HSF....I have seen a few fans die never one DOA, but it could happen....

This place has been building computers for a long time now you would think they know what they are doing. I have had 2 computers built by them in the past never had a problem. But this is the first Athlon 64 Nforce 4 system they are building for me. I don't know if they built one before with these specs.

lol. yon computer place is staffed by n00bs. Why aren't you building your own computer? You know enough to get a SD, and a decent to good mobo, but can't put it together?

Anyways, your CPU should be fine.

EDIT: I think that your computer place is suffering from some envy. Someone wants your SD, so they say its dead, you have to buy a new one, etc. They get free SD.

lol it all depends on how long they left it up. The CPU would likely turn it self off before it died, but NOT due to cool N quiet. that is started in windows, and you have to have windows loaded for that to work. Just turning your computer on with the fan not plugged in for like 10secs or so isnt gonna damage it. Probably last a couple minutes if it didnt bother to clock itself down.

I just talked again to the guy at the PC shop and he said the Fan on the Heat Sink is Definitely not working. And they are very good people at this store so they are not pulling a fast one on me. So cool n quiet is not the problem. He also said my CPU is not Damaged. Thank god He said he is surprised that the Fan is not working.

My old s754 turns off by it self when the temp gets to high.

Happened to me once when the fan wasnt working.

Either way, replace the dang fan and your all set.
