Hi, can i use a core 2 dup fan, heat/sink with my old dual core cpu?
i am sure it will fit( but am not 100% positive) but what about the heating? the core 2 duo was designed to operate at lower temps. am not sure it can handle the heat of a dual core(the core2duo is a 45nm processor).

thank you.

well all core 2 duos are not 45 nm as far as i remember the conroes are not 45 nm (ahh its been a long time since i last bought a pc so dont remember excatly)

Test it. If it's the same motherboard the heatsink will fit.

Some of the coolers made for the 45nm chips (like for the e5200) are lower quality than the older ones...but you should still be able to boot. Check temps immediately and keep an eye on them though, and don't overclock.

i was not clear back there. what i meant was that my core 2 duo is a 45nm processor. while the dual core is obviously now. also, let me point out that the heat sink of the dual core is bigger than the core 2 duo's heat sink.

any input is appreciated. thank you.

DuoCores are 65nm right (or is it 90?) if they aren't the same socket ( dont know) I'm not sure they would fit (I assume ur talking about a different motherboard).

Don't use the sinks for 45nm chips (penryn) on 65nm chips (conroe) or the PentiumD. Even the speed brackets within each process size may not be transferable- wouldn't put a heatsink for an E6400 on an X6800. Save yourself the risk of burning an older chip and just get something inexpensive- like the arctic 7

If the HSF came with a dual-core (like Smithfield or Presler) that had a 130W>=TDP >= 95W, I can't see how it would do harm to use it on a C2D (65W TDP). Nor do I see how it would make a difference to use a Conroe C2D HSF on a Penryn C2D.

But look at the time spent fretting over it.

You could get a SunbeamTech Core-Contact Freezer for under $40:

Core-Contact Freezer at Heatsink Factory

I might prefer a different cooler, like the Noctua NH-U12P or a TRUE, but there are plenty of heatpipe coolers out there that cost less and do a better job than the stock HSF -- from whatever processor it shipped with.

Can you use the HSF from your old HOT chip on your new COLDER chip? Yes!

Can you? Yes, if it fits. But, as has been explained, it's stupid. If the HSF was not designed to reasonably cool a hotter chip, you run an unnecessary risk using it when you could just buy an inexpensive cooler instead.

I am currently using an E8400's HSF on a E2180, it keeps it @ ~25C at idle, ~53C under load(Prime95). It's in an Antec Sonota, ambient temps are on the cooler side. For me, it's doing just fine. The only way to really tell for your particular situation is to install it, and run a program like Core Temp to monitor temps until you're satisfied it's cooling effectively enough. If not, get a different HSF.

Well, as far as I know, anyway, the TDP spec for the E8400 and the E2180 are the same. Aren't they 65W?

Intel is going to provide adequate cooling to meet their thermal spec for any CPU. And that imperative would tell me that their cooler for a CPU with lower TDP would provide less cooling for a CPU with higher TDP in the comparison between the two stock heatsinks.

I'd say that it's just not worth the trouble, for instance, to put an E8400 cooler on a Q6600 or a Presler CPU. I know that everyone is rolling their pennies now and avoiding Porterhouse in favor of Chuck Roast in this economy, but you could probably purchase a $25 heatpipe cooler that does better than the stock cooler spec'd for the CPU. I believe in using old parts when they're adequate, but not in the situation you describe.

I agree about the older dualies, 925 etc..but a non-oc'd Q6600 would be fine assuming a good case, and average ambient temps. Either way, I haven't seen where the OP stated which "dual-core" he wanted to use. For instance, the E2180 is sold as a "dual-core".

i am talking about using the HSF of e8400 on the pentium D 805.

btw- tdp of e8400 is 65W and tdp pentium D 805 is 95W.

You can do it, but it is not an ideal situation.
