Heat without heat sink?

I purchased a new set of components to make up a new system including:

q6600 Quad CPU
Giga-Byte GA-P35-DS4 motherboard
OCZ memory
OCZ 700 Gaming Power Supply
XFX 8800 graphics
Tuniq Tower 120 (lapped)

I wanted to make sure the components worked before lapping the processor. I plugged all the appropriate power connectors to the power supply, plugged in the power button from the case to the motherboard, put in the memory and graphics card. System turned on, posted, and then about 10 seconds later powered off. Tried again and the same deal. "Balanced" the Tuniq Tower 120 on the CPU (not mounted or TIM on it). System seemed to run for a bit more. Temperature started at 63 degrees and rose into the 80's. I shut it off. Question. Was it turning off so quickly due to heat? I know it's important to put TIM between the HS and IHS of the CPU, and screw down the HS, however does it make that much difference that the temperature would still creap up to 85 degrees in one minute of the system running with the Tinuq just sitting on it or is something else going on? Also everything in the bios including voltage settings seemed to be defaulted to manual which for now I switched to automatic. Any input would be appreciated if something is going on or if I'm just doing a bad thing as far as cooling and that's most likely the problem with it shutting off so quickly.

Thanks.

Well, obviously it's overheating because the cpu isn't getting any frigging cooling. The contact between the IHS and the tuniq is abysmal at best, and won't cool worth a damn. If it's posting, then it's working, so lap them to your hearts content, and install it PROPERLY next time around You could just for shits and giggles apply some tim, seat it correctly, install all your stuff, stresstest it, see what the temps do, and then compare before and after lapping temperatures. It's not like seating the tuniq takes hours anyways.

I'll... be nice and not say what I want to say.

If you're going to go through the trouble of lapping a processor, you really should do a before test, so that you know how much of an improvement in temperature you get (or don't) afterwards.
