I have recently purchased an Athlon XP 2100+ Thouroughbred and am looking to overclock it. What would be a good heatsink and fan combo that will give me great cooling, somewhat quiet, and reasonably priced.

How loud do you want it to be?
How much do you want to spend including shipping?
Do you have proper case ventilation?

Answer those questions and I'll be glad to give you a few good suggestions

Good budget solution: Thermalright SK-6 Along with a YS-Tech 50CFM 80MM fan that produces 39DBA noise, or Panaflow low DBA fan if you want a quiet solution. SVCompucycle.com has the SK-6 for $10, a steal if you ask me.

if the board has the holes...pal8045 or mcx462 with a 80mm fan wtih cfmba ratio you like

or even if the board has holes...an slk800 w/ 60/70/80mm fan wth the attributes you like

those wouldbe my picks...i just recently bought an slk800 with a sunon 82cfm fan (aka tornado)

I can't stand fan that are noisy because they would be the only thing that makes the most noise since every other component is quieter. I just take the fan, throw it away, and keep the heatsink. It is very distracting, I can still hear it even with the volume all the way up when gaming or watching divxs. Anything 40+ dba for me is unacceptable as they will roar like a jet engine, or bigger jet engine as noise level increases.

I am also wondering if the fan should be blowing on the heatsink or sucking from it. I have heard people mention both and was wondering if either way was better for cooling.

I find the Volcano 9 to be easy and versatile. The SmartFan it comes with is fully RPM adjustable from 2000-5500 rpm.

No wait don't do it! Overclocking is bad (and morally ambiguous). Hehe, remember when people actually felt this way?

SV Compucycle has the Thermalright SLK-800 for $30. Add their stock SVC 80mm ball-bearing fan for $2.99 and you will have a very good HSF combo for under $40 shipped. The stock fan runs around 32 dBA, I believe. It's a soft whir rather than a high-pitched whine. If that is still too noisy you can get a Panaflo L1A fan from SVC or elsewhere. The hydro sleeve bearing and blade design makes for low noise and decent cooling. The SLK-800 is nice in that it delivers great cooling performance even with quiet / low CFM 80mm fans.

I am kinda new at putting in nonstock fans.... so how does the SLK-800 attach to the fan? Is it by screws or clips or whatever?

Unless you go with the Alpha. I tried both ways with mine and sucking from it made it slightly cooler, then I added an 80mm exhaust fan next to the HS and that helpd a ton! I now have a 92mm on my Alpha and it works great!
