I read somewhere that you can use a socket 1156 heatsink on the new 1155 socket that they are compatible. Can anyone confirm this?

How's that working out?

I had been planning on using a Zalman CNPS10X Performa, but given the thermal performance of the Sandy Bridge CPUs, that might be overkill and the CM 212 is cheaper. I'm just not wild about the whole direct heat pipe touch thing.

Yes, I am using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus on my i5-2500/GA-H67MA-UD2H.

I run a stock 2500, and wanted a quiet cooler. It's inaudible at idle, but gets a little louder under load - though nowhere near bad enough for me to do anything about it.

The only issue I had with it was during installation where one of the bolts had a misaligned thread. Made it a little trickier to tighten up, but a second set of hands and a spanner sorted that out.

Are you running the 2500 or 2500K (and overclocking)?

I bought an 1156 adapter kit for my Thermalright Ultima 90 that I'm planning on using with an i7-2600k (used on my Q6600 now). I think it will be more than sufficient. So, if you have a decent older heatsink, you may be able to get an adapter kit so it mounts to the newer mounting holes.

Thedosbox:

Can you comment on your motherboard--Gigabyte GA-H67MA-UD2H?

I will likely be building a Sandy Bridge machine within weeks and it is one of 2 boards I am seriously considering--the other being an Intel micro ATX.

Any particular shortcomings or annoyances?

What BIOS are you running?

Thanks.

That's what I plan on doing since I have an Ultra 120 extreme, or I will just get a mobo like an Asrock that can handle a socket 775 hsf with no problems already. Of course if the one that comes with the 2600k is nice and quite and will let me do at least 4.2 with no problems then I may just use that.

I'm running the F4 BIOS. There is also a beta F6 BIOS available, but it just adds 3TB HDD support.

Layout wise, it's pretty good:

+ the PCI-Express x16 slot is the closest to the CPU, and does not block the SATA connectors
+ there was plenty of room around the socket to mount the CPU cooler
+ fan headers are four-pin PWM
+ it has a PS2 connector
+ comes with secure-fit SATA cables

- the system fan header is too far away from the backplate for the case fan I have
- doesn't use a connector block system like the Asus Q-connector for front panel connections
- no PCI slot (only a negative if you're using a PCI card)

Huh.. Got a megahalems that fits 1156. Wonder how that 2600k would clock with a megahalems?

the 2600k from most reports don't really respond much to better cooling. Plus they are not very hot. So mega might just be overkill and your max oc headroom might just be the same as someone using hyper 212+. of course having a mega will never hurt who knows future chips might well require and respond to that extra cooling.
