Im using the Gigabyte DS3 board with a E6400 and retail heat sink. How can i tell if the heatsink is installed properly? According to the manual, your suppose to hear it click but i wasn't able to get that sound for both of the left fasteners on the heatsink no matter how hard i pressed down on it. If i pressed any harder, i think the motherboard might snap. Is there any other way to tell that it's fastened?

Also, are there any dangers of an unproperly installed heatsink? ( ie not all the fasteners are secured).

Hey Stickybytes, I found it easiest to install the stock Intel cooler outside the case. I alligned all the pins with the installation holes and pushed one pin in at a time in a diagonal pattern. So if these numbers were the holes:

12
34

I pushed 1 in first, then 4, then 2, then 3. Having the motherboard outside your case makes this much easier. You can turn over the board to make sure the pins are installed correctly because you will see the tip of the black pin protruding from the surrounding clear plactic.

Good luck.

Good advice!

I have a new Conroe and new mobo on the way and will be walking this path too. I always prefer attaching my cpu, heatsink/fan, and RAM before I even think about putting it into the case.

For once, I will be going with the stock Intel fan as I am just gonna run it at stock speeds at first. I might buy an aftermarket heatsink/fan, most likely Alpha if they come out with one for this chip but until then I am running stock.

Yup. If you haven't installed a 775 HSF before, best to examine it to understand how it locks before actually installing it.

Yep, that is actually good advice for installing ANY cooling solution. Try it and test it outside the case first.

Hey thanks for the great advice! I actually didn't follow the diagonal pattern that you stated. My only problem is that my motherboard and all my other components are all already installed. Do you recommend that i take everything out and make sure i installed it properly or just try to use it as is?

Also, what are the signs of an inproperly installed heatsink? Dangers?

It becomes fairly obvious. You'll be reporting insane temperatures like 70C at idle.
