heatsink recommendation?

I'm currently using an XP 1900+ with the stock amd heatsink, on an ecs k7s5a

After 10 months the fan has started to show that the bearings are getting bad, don't feel like dealing with it as far as oiling/cleaning.

I remember hearing good things about thermalrights products, of course this was awhile back and they're also shipped without a fan

Basically I'm wanting to know what would be a good quiet heatsink/fan combo that I'll have no problems mounting on the board.

price.. reasonable price range, don't really want to spend over $40 for the combo, although I figure I can get a good (not necessarily top of the line) combo for my price.

For a nice HSF combo, I'd go with a Vantec Aeroflow. P4 or AMD, not that expensive, and the performance is on point.

SLK-800 w/Panaflo 80mm L1A is my recommendation. Depending on where you get it, total will be around $38, less shipping. If you just have $40 to spend (must include shipping), the SK7 with the same fan will be around $30, less shipping and will perform very closely to the SLK-800 which is currently the second top heatsink available (only taken by the SLK-900).

The Aeroflow is also a good choice, its design is similar to ThermalRight's now discontinued AX7 which is awesome. If you want to save even more cash, you won't be let down by it.

I'm currently having some major trouble actually finding somewhere with both items in stock

I have found the heatsink and a fan (FBA08A 24L1A - OEM)
although it appears to only be rated at 14.1cfm, seems a bit low to me for this purpose.

$57 standard shipping, but as I said, not too sure if that fan will be enough

I've also found the aeroflow for $39, but I can deal with the $57 order, just figured $40 for a general figure.

The other in stock panaflow fan seems a bit better suited, FBA08A12U 38.2db and 46.9cfm

of course.. final selection could vary depending on different products and avaliability

Consider what S V C has to offer.
hard to beat the SK-7 for $19.99, and a Y.S Tech adjustable fan goes for $ 8.99.

just buy a 60mm panaflo to replace your noisy fan...
Thats if you care about noise. anything else is overkill.

I'm still looking for a fan, I might have simply bought the combo at 2cooltek except they're currently out of stock (can't see until you add to cart)

Currently I've been looking at newegg, since they've had the SLK-800 in stock, of course with said heatsink finding the right fan for the job isn't always easy.

I don't care about looks, but I do care about effectiveness and noise (to a point)

EDIT:
actually finding a pdf about the specs for the panaflow fan mentioned earlier (FBA08A24L1A) it does appear to be 24cfm.

with the two models FBA08A24L1A and FBA08A12L1A, could I really go wrong with one over the other?

not sure if this applies, but is the CPU retail? If so, if you bought it new, isn't it still under warranty? Does the warranty extend to the HSF?

granted this is off original topic, but yes it is retail, but unsure about the warranty extending to heatsink, looks like i'll need to dig up the paper, will update when I find it.

EDIT: couldn't find anything in the warranty information stating that the hs/fan was covered, but it does say that the warranty is void when used with a different hs/fan than what's provided, so I'll be sending off an email to see, bad thing about warranty is they may require I send it in first, which I'd rather not have downtime on my main system.

SECOND EDIT:
Turning the system off to check the serial# made it worse. the fan is now spinning so low mbm won't even recognize it, current temp (minmal load) is 79C, and that sensor is the motherboard, not the internal diode.

the temp appears to be rather variable (initially I watched it go from 40-84, and then 84 down to 61, fan replacement is definitrly required however.

Sounds like you need a HSF quick. I'm going to have to join the SLK-800 crowd. I've used it now for about 2 months and have been very pleased. Now I am using a 84.1 cfm fan that is rather loud. So if you are looking for quiet, then you'll have to find a different fan.

And another HSF that I have had go through my system was Thermaltake's Volcano 9. I have had my system overclocked with this HSF and the temps were higher than my SLK-800, but still safe. And the fan on the Volcano 9 is a lot quieter than my SLK-800 fan.

Hope this helps.

if u want a good quiet HSF i would go for the cooler master hhc-l61 i have one on my xp2400
and its realy quiet with my cpu at 42 idel which is not bad for a quiet 60mm fan at 2200 rpm and no case fans

I was worried too about mounting problems with HSFs but I just got my Thermalright SK-7 and Panaflo L1A it mounted very easily. No worries about cracking the chip it was very simple.

Hope you get it worked out...I can't imagine that the HSF is not covered under warranty, since if you have to replace it with second market HSF it would automatically void warranty on the CPU. Can't see AMD doing that to you...Please post when you find out.

Not that this subject isn't beaten to death, I agree with CaptnKirk,
the performance difference between the SLK-800 and SK-7 is minimal, but the 7 is significantly less expensive.

I'm going to wait and see what comments I get tomorrow from amd, at the moment I've found that I can force the fan to spin back up at normal speed for a couple hours.

If it's faster/easier to just get a new hs/fan I'll just do that, only reason right now I'm even bothering to wait, is due to the fact its still covered by warranty, although this could be a good reason to unlock the cpu.

I have to wonder how much damage I've caused by running at the high temps though, external sensor has seen a high of 108c, I just have a feeling theres bound to be a bit of damage.

Do you drive your car around with no oil in the engine too? :Q For goodness sake, do NOT run the CPU if the fan isn't working. If you want an official warranty-preserving solution, get one of these very good $15 Taisols and use the included thermal patch, which meets AMD's warranty requirements. If you don't mind losing official warranty coverage, the SK-7 with Arctic Silver 3 will work better yet and allow lower noise levels thanks to the 80mm fan option.

KD Computers has the Vantec Aeroflow for $27 (the socket 478 version is $25). It will provide great cooling without excessive noise or cost. It outdid my Thermalright AX-7.

I highly recommend these coolers.
